Thursday 30th July

Just nine turned out to finish our year with David Low taking the pot. All the best to everyone with health, prosperity and a lower handicap.

Covid 19

Harry Wright has tested positive today and as he played yesterday he recommends anyone who is concerned should self test. He went straight home so hopefully minimum contact. He has very mild symptoms with a cold and slight dry cough and no idea how he could have become infected.
Ian Porter is in hospital awaiting tests today so hopefully better news later.

Tuesday, 28 December 2021

Tuesday 28th December

Charles Woodhouse put in the best card of eighteen players with 37 (29 - 26) beating Tommy Neilly on countback (27 - 25). Hard to believe how benevolent the conditions were for the time of year.

Friday, 24 December 2021

Merry Christmas

Only four of us went out yesterday so we didn't get chance to wish everyone the season's greetings. Hope you all enjoy yourselves and for those who aren't able to play next week, health and prosperity in the new year. Malcolm Platts has been in touch and sends his best regards to everybody.

Tuesday, 21 December 2021

Tuesday 21st December

Seventeen took advantage of calm conditions. Tommy Neilly won with 40 points (32 - 27) and John Wraight whose forte seems to be going out last came second with 38 (9 - 6).

Thursday, 16 December 2021

Thursday 16th December

David Low turned in a winning 40 (21 - 16) points today in very favourable conditions and David Frith second with 37 (15 - 13). Sixteen played.

Tuesday, 14 December 2021

Tuesday 14th December

Congratulations to Brian for organising today's bottle trot. Eight teams of three played in chilly and windy conditions and a roomfull stayed for the presentation. Everyone was a winner, some luckier than others. Gilmour sends the season's greetings to everyone and a cautionary warning that he won't be around for a while because in spite of being careful his partner has gone down with the bug. Let's hope it's only a mild infection.

Bottle Trot and Road Closure

First the good news - as the forecast looks good the bottle trot will be held tomorrow (Tues 14th), entry fee £2.00. The other news is a road closure by Maryport cemetery meaning traffic to Allonby and beyond will have to find an alternative route.

Thursday, 9 December 2021

Thursday 9th December

Another decent day with eighteen players. Willie Smith and Grant Anderson both had 35 points. Willie (32 - 30) won on countback, Grant just loses one shot (20 - 19).

Annual Prize Giving and Meal

This year's celebration was very well attended and an enjoyable success thanks to Brian for re-organising  the schedule at short notice, Bob Finlinson for a challenging general knowledge quiz and Harry who's photographs will be enjoyed in due course. Liam and his staff provided meals of the usual high quality.
Although one or two ventured out I think it was generally accepted that postponing the bottle trot was sensible given the rain and gale force winds.

Monday, 6 December 2021

Tuesday 7th Bottle Trot

I think this is the message everyone was expecting. In view of the horrendous weather forecast the Bottle Trot has been postponed until next Tuesday (weather permitting) and the following arrangements for the meal have been made.
Please assemble at one 1.00pm for your meal which has been brought forward to around 1.30pm.
The prize giving and quiz will go ahead as normal.
The Sandpipers tee is still reserved for 9.00am for anyone wishing to venture out.
Not everyone is on my mailing list so please spread the word.

Thursday, 2 December 2021

Thursday 2nd December

A bitter north wind died down after an hour or so. Terry Bunn had the best of seventeen scores with 38 (15 - 11) and Brian Taylor second with the best of several 36s on countback (14 - 12). Two recover shots, John Wraight (7 - 9) and David Low (19 - 21).

Wednesday, 1 December 2021

Xmas Texas Scramble

Of the thirty names for our social next Tuesday, quite a few have indicated that they will be attending for the meal but not playing golf. To help Brian assess the number of bottles required for prizes could those wishing to play (weather permitting) please indicate on the list next to their names by the weekend.

Thursday, 25 November 2021

Thursday 25th November

Just eighteen played today which wasn't too bad after the initial chill. Steven Whitehead won with 37 points (21 - 18) and Brian Taylor second (16 - 14), beaten on the back nine.
The sheet for our Xmas lunch has thirty names but we suspect that not all will wish to start at 9.00am in the cold so could you please advise in advance whether you wish to join in the bottle trot American Competition. We will also be keeping a close eye on the weather forecast to assess whether it will be necessary to alter the meal time.

Tuesday, 23 November 2021

Tuesday 23rd November

Surprisingly, only seventeen played today in quite pleasant conditions. Two good scores of 39, Antonio Gerbino (19 - 15) having the better back nine than Sandy Tonner (23 - 20). Joe Holmes, David Houldridge and Gilmour McKellar all get two shots back having been unsuccessful on their last four outings.

Thursday, 18 November 2021

Thursday 18th November

Just seventeen played today in dry and warm conditions not expected in mid November.
Bob Finlinson won with 39 points (22 - 18) and myself second with 37 (24 - 22).

Difficult 2nd Shot

Greens staff leave vehicle in middle of 11th fairway

Tuesday 16th November

A strong west wind made the front nine tricky for today's twenty two players but the really foul weather held off until the last fourball finished. Steve Whitehead won with 32 (23 - 21) and David Low second with 31 (20 - 19). Tommy Neilly gets two shots back.
Our treasurer informs me that quite a few member s haven't paid their subs yet which fell due at our AGM and requests early payment.

Thursday, 11 November 2021

Thursday 3rd November

Twenty four played today which took us to near the limit for daylight available. Two very good scores of 40 points, Eddie Varah losing out on the back six to John Parker (handicaps reduced to 10 and 22 respectively). Hands up who spotted that our Xmas do is not on the 8th December as previously  reported but Tuesday 7th.

Tuesday, 9 November 2021

Tuesday 9th November

Today turned out quite pleasant for the fourteen players who turned up, Jim Gilfillan won with 35 points and Tony Davis' 33 was just pipped by Gilmour McKellar who had the better back nine.
The menu for our Xmas do on the 8th December is now on the noticeboard, a two course meal for a very reasonable £14. The day includes a Bottle Trot and trophy presentations.
A list will be put up for those wishing to join in.

Thursday, 4 November 2021

Thursday 4th November

First of all thank you to Gerry Fisher for his generosity to everyone to celebrate reaching the age of qualifying for a free bus pass. Today's golf was played in bright sunlight with a winning 37 points from David Houldridge and Peter Taylor continuing his progress to playing off scratch with second placed 36.

Tuesday, 2 November 2021

Tuesday 2nd November

David Frith's winning 39 points was two points clear of second place Vince Ross. A pleasant sunny day but a big black cloud towards the end is a reminder of the failing light for the tail enders as we get further into winter. Thanks to David Houldridge for filling in the results sheet and a reminder to please check your Sandpiper handicaps prior to teeing off.

Saturday, 30 October 2021

Winter Start Times

A reminder that on Tuesday we revert to our 10.50am winter start time, draw done at 10.45am.

Tuesday, 26 October 2021

Tuesday 26th October

Sixteen of us set off into a westerly gale. Not surprisingly scoring was difficult and Eddie Varah's 31 was good enough for first place and Malcolm Platts 28 with the best back nine took second. Peter Taylor misplaced a New Zealand coin he uses for a ball marker the other day and has sentimental value so if anyone knows it's whereabouts please advise.

Thursday, 21 October 2021

Thursday 21st October Results

John Wraight made a serious dent in his handicap with 38 points in today's fresh and chilly conditions. David Houldridge came second with a creditable 36 points. Twenty took part.
Arrangements have been made to update the engraving on our trophies so anyone having one at home is encouraged to return it urgently for presentation at our Xmas bash.

From 7pm on 24th October to 6am on 3rd November (day/night)
then overnight 3rd, 4th and 5th November (night time only 7pm-6am).
Closure 2: A596 both ways between Maryport Railway Bridge and A594 Netherhall Corner.
Overnight 6th to 15th November (night time only 7pm-6am).
Diversion: via A594, A595 and A66.
Note: Works are subject to weather, schedule may change.

Posted: 19/10/2021.

Temporary Greens

I'm informed that work on the greens isn't complete yet and that tomorrow we will play of normal tees to temporary greens. Also, for those travelling to Silloth via Maryport, from the 24th the road will be closed from Risehow turn off to the waste disposal centre to Grasslot followed by Grasslot to Lidl's. The road from the waste unit via the harbour and town centre will probably turn into a rat run.

Fairway Mats

The Club is making mats compulsory from the 1st November and the Sandpiper committee have agreed that as responsible members and to further protect the course we may start using them with immediate effect in our social events on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Until the Club's rule kicks in it will remain optional.

Thursday, 14 October 2021

Thursday 14th October Result

Quite a few of today's sixteen players ended up demoralised after playing in a strong west wind. Only two scored better than 30 points, Gilmour McKellar with 33 and Arthur Thompson with 34.
Please return any trophies so we can get them engraved up to date ready for next season.

Tuesday, 12 October 2021

Tuesday 12th October Result

Another successful Texas Scramble thanks to Brian Taylor's organising skills and 23 competitors. Conditions were calm and sunny with Peter Taylor, Clive Milburn and myself returning a winning nett 59.33 and loss of two shots each.

Sandpiper Championship

Congratulations to Andrew on becoming the 2021 champion.

I have donated the £100 Sandpiper Championship prize to the Fight Bladder Cancer charity. Bladder Cancer affects about 10,000 new people in the UK every year and the treatment and consequences can be spread over many years. The charity aims to help research and provide support to sufferers. I know that this is a subject which will resonate with several current and former Sandpipers.

Thursday, 7 October 2021

Thursday 7th October

Just thirteen played today when the strong north wind was the worst enemy with a little bit of damp thrown in. David Low won with 37 points and Antonio Gerbino second with 36. Please check your Sandpiper handicaps on our notice board before setting out. Next Tuesday we have a popular Texas Scramble.

Tuesday, 5 October 2021

Brindley Salver Result

Understandably, only five pairs went out in drizzle blasted by a north wind. Thank you to Willie Smith who volunteered to mark a card for the (odd) couple John Parker and Gilmour McKellar who won the Brindley Salver with 37 points.
Main points from the AGM were the team colours remain unchanged, Gilmour will run an eclectic next season on Thursdays to encourage higher numbers and the old chestnut of slow play discussed at length.
The minutes will be published in due course.
A reminder that the £5 subs are now due and it would help if anyone not wishing to renew membership would advise Jim.

Monday, 27 September 2021

Tuesday 5th October

Please note and make all your contacts aware that the Brindley Salver Greensomes commences at 9.00am (not the 9.40 in the club calendar). This will be followed by the AGM but should inclement weather prevent golf the AGM will proceed about 1.00pm. No formal proposals have been received but please inform Brian if you wish a particular item to be discussed (ie bug resistant team shirts).

Saxons v Celts Result

The Celts, assisted by several players of dubious lineage managed to recoup the missing trophy by four games to two.

Thursday, 16 September 2021

Thursday 16th September Result

Another great day for golf, Brian Taylor and Andrew Edwards both having 36 points. Brian won on the back nine and goes from 15 to 12. Andrew loses two shots and now plays off 11.

Tuesday, 14 September 2021

Tuesday 14th September Result

The drizzle stopped exactly as forecast and we all enjoyed a sunny day with minimal wind.
Tom Borthwick won the George Wright Trophy with 38 points and John Wraight was runner up with the best of three 37s. Please check the noticeboard with revised handicaps for winners as well as those who have got shots back.
Brian Taylor requests everyone with trophies to return them for engraving sometime in the future with two years' winners.
Next Tuesday we have the annual Saxons v  Celts battle and a sheet is on the notice board for names.

Monday, 13 September 2021

Carlisle Match Result

Very pleasant golfing conditions today but one win, two halves and five losses put a damper on things. Just heard that Terry Bunn is isolating  after a visit from a tradesman although symptoms are mild. Proves we still have to be careful.

Saturday, 11 September 2021

Tuesday 14th September

Just a reminder that we play for the George Wright Trophy on Tuesday which is a handicap qualifier and entries via the touch screen. Also due to complications reorganising our home match against Workington they have agreed to abandon it this year.

Penrith v Sandpipers Result

Another scorcher at Penrith today after the mist burnt off. The Penrith captain informed us that five of the matches were decided by just one hole. Unfortunately he was smiling at the time before announcing a 7 - 1 win for Dads Army.

Thursday 19th August Result

I think I have today's results correct having received them over the phone while being driven along the Carlisle bypass. This may come as a shock to the two winners with exceptional scores now we have reverted to the original handicapping system where Peter Taylor's 41 points has cost him 5 shots and Tony Davis' 40 points 4 shots. With only sixteen playing it wasn't financially a good move.
Next Tuesday we play for the Saunders Trophy, entering via email to Joe by 6pm Sunday. Next week is also the last week for email entries as the following week we revert to balls in the chute.

Again twenty nine played in clement conditions  for the Jimmy Banks Trophy which was won by Steven Whitehead with 40 points off a stroke allowance of 23. Applying the 2 stroke penalty carries his Sandpiper allowance forward to 21. John Parker's 39 second place on countback entitled him to a 1 shot reduction.

Email Entries

The current method of entering names for Tuesdays and Thursdays was envisaged as a temporary means to accommodate the Club's social distancing requirements. Whilst it has obvious advantages the socialising has suffered and reliance on Joe and myself to be available on Sunday and Tuesday evenings can't be maintained indefinitely.
Therefore from Sunday 29th August it will not be necessary to book an entry and on Tuesday 31st August we revert to drawing balls from the bag. For our newer members this means having a clearly identifiable ball to go in the draw and all the excitement of being drawn out last.
Balls are drawn from the bag at 10.50am and we are respectfully requested not to crowd round the chute as we are not out of the woods yet.

Penrith Team Invitation 22 Sept

Regrettably due to being unable to raise a team with several people removing their names we have informed Penrith that we are unable to enter the competition. Financially this means we do not have to forward the £170 entry fee and risk not recovering it from team members. We also informed them that we would like to be considered for a 2022 entry should circumstances improve..

Thursday, 12 August 2021

Thursday 12th August Result

First of all welcome back to Eddie Varah although he could have brought a calmer day with him. The strong wind was reflected in the scores, four with 33 points of which Tim Herbert took first place beating David Frith on a a back 6 countback. Next Tuesday we play for the Banks Trophy so please make sure you email you entries to Joe in good time.

Tuesday 3rd August Result

Alan Proud won't sleep tonight having scored 47 points  in today's benign conditions and winning the Carrick Trophy. Unfortunately I can only touch him for two shots. Joe Penrice continued his winning streak with a very creditable 41 points and a one shot penalty.
This Thursday  is our home match against Carlisle and Tuesday 10th at home against Penrith. Non team members wishing to play on those days will need to book their own tee times.

Starting next week everyone who tees off puts £1 in the kitty in the lounge and we revert to our very popular handicapping system. We start with the Laurie Carrick trophy with winner and runner up losing 2 and 1 shots respectively.

Simon informs us that the Pro's shop will only be staffed by one person and asks us to be patient if they are called out to sort out buggies etc. I recommend we each collect a few cards to keep in our bags.
More importantly we will be returning part way to the original funding and handicapping on the first Tuesday in August. Entries and draw will continue via Joe as at present but entry pounds must be deposited in the lounge on completion of round. If you tee off you owe the kitty a pound and cash will be split 60/40 between first and second.. Even more important we are reverting to the Sandpiper handicapping system and the sheet pinned on the notice board.

Powfoot Match Result

We got off to a flying start from the first games in but that's as good as it got, eventually losing 3.5 - 4.5.
We enjoyed sunshine, a course in good condition and a tasty meal afterwards.
Last time I looked we were still one short for our home match against Carlisle.

A disappointing 3.5 - 5.5 loss today together with chaotic organisation and swarms of midges everywhere. On the bright side the course was in good condition, the weather held up and David and Octavia supplied a superb meal.

Seascale Match Result

Seascale's two victories included a win by one of the pairings we loaned them resulting in a 5 - 2 win for the Sandpipers.
Please have another look at the team selection for Workington where the start time has been amended.
I've adjusted the intervals to eight minutes and hope that they stick to their usual arrangement of starting the last three matches at the 17th tee. Keep an eye out for any further amendments that we haven't been made aware of as well as the one where we were expected to raise a team of twenty.

Brampton Match Result

The good news was that after the first four games we were two up with two wins and two halves.
Then it all went down hill with four losses so the final result was 5 - 3 to Brampton. At least the weather and meals were fine.
Joe asks me to remind everyone that the sheets for our away matches at Powfoot and Workington on the 12th and 19th July respectively are on the notice board for entries.

Apologies

I was so knackered last night I forgot to thank Roy Williams for his generosity at the 19th to celebrate today's significant birthday.

Sandpiper Handicap Qualifying Competitions

Further to a recent edict from England Golf, handicap allowances through the WHS touchscreen for Qualifying Competitions will be reduced to 95%. for our yellow tees Trophy Competitions.
No calculation is required from the competitor, the programme adjusts the score automatically.
One other important thing to remember is that if you fail to record the number of shots on a hole enter NR on the touchscreen. DO NOT ENTER NS.
Joe is still one player short for our match at Seascale and therefore can't complete the team selection. Please add your name to the notice board list if you are available.
The team sheet for our home match v Brampton 10th June is also pinned up.

Time is marching on for arranging championship ties and just to recap the rules:
  • The first name is the challenger and in the absence of being able to arrange a mutually agreeable date should give his opponent three dates with not more than two in the same week.
  • Failure to comply by either the challenger or opponent before the play-by date will result in the non compliant party being disqualified.

The championship draw  is now pinned on the notice board with generous play - by dates but as always it is recommended not to leave arranging ties to the last minute. The top player is the challenger and responsible for trying to amicably agree dates.
