Tuesday 29th January

With a dire weather forecast for this afternoon it seemed sensible to finish the outward half at the seventh and turn back down the fifteenth.
Tom Neilly's 20 points took 60% of the £12 prize cash, one ahead of Harry Wright.

Thursday 24th January

Two scores of 45 points topped the leader board today with Bruce Bedford edging Joe Campbell into second place on count back.
Fourteen played in relatively benign conditions on temporary greens.

Tuesday 22nd January

Once again playing the temporary course off half handicaps produced a couple of excellent scores with Brian Taylor's 43 points putting Robin Binny with 41 into second place. Sixteen played with everyone supporting the bar and enjoying the craic afterwards.

Hi from sunny Dubai

Hi Dave

It's greetings from hot Dubai.
Hope you are still golfing in blizzard and rainy Silloth. Did go to watch Abu Dhabi HSBC golf last week it was very unlucky JR did not win it on Sunday after his superb round on Saturday.

Ejaz

New Year's Greetings

Tony Davis has been in touch from New Zealand to wish everyone the seasons greetings and tell us he is managing to cope with the 30 degree temperatures. He's dividing his time between playing golf and cycling and has made sufficient progress to enter his wife Barbara for the NZ Iron Man cycling competition.
I forgot to mention that John Dixon was welcomed back to playing again after quite a long lay off.

Thursday 17th January

Biting cold today for the seventeen competitors but the half handicap scores remain impressive.
Brian Taylor was runner up with 41 points to Harry Wright's 43.

Tuesday 15th January

Incredible scores today from the eighteen contestants who played 17 holes on winter greens and half Sandpiper handicaps.
Ian Porter had the best back nine of the other three with 41 points but Geoff Scott's 42 took first prize after his card had been deciphered.
Harry Wright has a Hillbilly for sale including battery and charger. Very reasonably priced!!!

Thursday 10th January

A better turnout today with sixteen. Brian Taylor's 35 points took first place with Don Young second.

Tuesday 8th January

Today's damp gloomy start turned into a warm, calm afternoon but only twelve turned out.
Robin Binny shot himself in the foot with a winning 33 points (2 shot handicap reduction) and I didn't learn with a second placed 32 points.

Open Competitions 2013

The on line booking service for this year's opens started today so there are no paper forms to fill in. The only ways are by DIY on line or asking the Club's office staff to do it for you.
Computer entry is quite simple but you are required to pay by the usual cards via a secure server.

Thursday 3rd January 2013

First game of the New Year and the twelve who turned up made a quorum.
I have strong suspicions that the other eleven held back to let me win with 34 points and first prize of £7.20p (not much reward for the loss of 2 shots). Ian Porter went straight home so might not be aware that his 32 points cost him one shot for even less cash.

Casual Water

"Rules of Golf" regarding relief from casual water have been debated amongst ourselves (and other weekend playing partners), and at he risk of being flamed, I summarise from a series of internet articles on the subject.
a: The definition of Abnormal Ground includes casual water.
b: Ball actually seen landing in casual water.
c: Ball suspected of landing in casual water.
With regard to 'b', the player may take relief either by recovering his ball and playing from nearest point of relief or if unable to recover his ball relief must be taken from point of entry.
With regard to 'c', if the landing area of the ball is obscured from point of stance then it cannot be assumed that the ball has ended up in casual water and if not found is then deemed to be a lost ball.
If anyone finds evidence that the above is flawed please email me quoting the relevant citation.
The water looks likely to be with us for some time to come so hopefully we can all agree to sing from the same hymn sheet.
On a brighter note, Charles Tidsworth has undergone surgery and feels really well so hopefully he'll be able to join us again.
