The sun shone all day for the 22 who played in round 3 of the winter League However it was a serious problem as it was extremely difficult, at times, to follow your shot in its direction. The eventual winner and second place were in the last fourball but with clear skies there was no problem with fading light. Brian Taylor won with 38 points and Tony Gerbino was second with 36. Our normal Sandpiper tee-times are available next Tuesday ( Christmas Eve ) for those who do not have last minute shopping to do.

Tuesday 10th Dec 24
A bright sunny start turned into a very chilly finish for the 18 players who competed today. Winning with 35 points was Tim Herbert and second ( on countback ) with 34 points was Eddie Varah. These points totals did not include the 8th hole which we entered as Not Started (NS) due to the temporary green in place.
Thursday 5th Nov 24
The annual Bottle Trot took place today although the threat of wind and rain kept several off the course, attending the Christmas meal only. The winning team were Howard Foster, Martin Fouracre and Dave Atherton.

Tuesday 3rd Dec 2024
21 played today in the rearranged Winter Thursday League. The weather permitted us to play on the full course although the cool, cloudy day meant that the last group played the 18th in very poor light even though it was only 3.30 pm. Two scores stood well above the pack with Grant Anderson ( welcome back) second with 38 points and Eddie Varah first with an impressive 40 points. The bottle trot is set to be played this Thursday 5th Dec with a 9.00 am start time followed by Christmas Lunch.

Forecast is for a cool sunny day on Thursday.

Tuesday 19th November.
The club handicap secretary reported at a recent committee meeting how well the Sandpipers were doing at returning acceptable ( general play ) scorecards. A feather in our cap. The WHS relies on accurate score submissions to calculate a golfer's handicap. By returning acceptable scores whenever they play a measured course , golfers ensure their handicap reflects their true playing ability. Submitting honest scores upholds the integrity of the game and ensures a fair playing field for all golfers.
To that end 15 of our 19 playing today returned acceptable scorecards. Martin Fouracre won with 41 points and David Blain came second with 40 on what was a bitterly cold day for us all.

Thick fog, which had delayed some tee times, cleared enough to allow all 28 Sandpipers to tee off from 10.50 onwards. The first hour was very chilly but the sun broke through and became the problem as those who could launch their drives into the sky had great difficulty in seeing where they went. This did not deter Robert Fletton from winning with 40 points or Harry Wright securing second with 38 points.
For the record, our Hon. Sec. Arthur Thompson spoke to us all prior to going out on the subject of R&A rules of golf and the onus on us to sign our cards and when to sign them. Abiding by these ensures that we uphold the principles of fair play and sportsmanship and comply with England Golf's rules when handicap calculations and tournament results are generated. The R&A rules in focus were the marking and replacing of a ball on the green and the reasonable actions that are allowed when searching for and identifying a ball once found. Excessive actions which result in improved conditions for your next shot could result in a penalty. Our Hon. Sec. spoke at length of the strong bond we have as a group of golfers and the resulting enjoyment from battling each other for a small financial reward. Everybody plays their part in ensuring that this continues and flourishes.
Our Donation to the 4th Regiment Veterans Condolence fund has now increased to £201 after a further two additions.

Tuesday 5th November Sandpipers raised £171 for our veterans.
Well done to Howard Foster for organising today's event and for the supply of prizes for the winners.
20 members took part in teams of two in a PINEHURST GREENSOME off the green tees ( Both players tee off and both play a second shot but using their partners ball. Then they chose the ball in the best position and played alternate shots until holed out ).
The winners were Joe Campbell and Tony Gerbino with 49 points. They beat Tom Borthwick and Tim Herbert in a count back. Prizes for nearest the pin and nearest the pin in two were David Wood X 2, Denzil Addison and John Wraight.
Thanks to another 60 something birthday, Gerry Fisher took great pleasure in buying us all a drink.
Howard Foster, on behalf of the veterans of the 4th Regiment Royal Artillery, would like to thank us all for taking part and the committee for deciding to donate the monies raised to their cause of supporting veterans and their families.

in Aid of Military Charities
Howard Foster has kindly offered to organise this Tuesdays social match as a fund raising event in aid of military charities. Format will be 'Pinehurst Competition', with prizes for winning pair and closest pin. Hopefully the weather will be kind and we have a good turnout. Any donations will be very much appreciated for this very worthwhile cause.
Howard has asked that all players be present at 10.30am for briefing on game format, handicap calculations and a little pre-match tipple! First tee 10.50am as normal, please ensure your ball is in draw by 10.40am, late! you're in last group.

Thursday 31st October
19 Wizards ventured out in a grey, damp, cold, breezy day. ( somebody must have cast a spell on the BBC forecast which had indicated slightly more benign conditions! )
A wise and kind wizard wearing shimmering robes and riding on a magnificent blue chariot glided effortlessly round the course. Swift by name and swift and skillful by nature, Owen took first prize with 41 points. His smile would have been even greater had the event been a Qualifier but due to us all having to use fairway mats on the Green Tees, he had to be happy with our congratulations and the cash.
David Low was 2nd with 38 points!!
Tuesday 29th Oct 24
24 played in bright sunny conditions Winner on the day was David Blain with an enviable 44 points and second with 40 points, matching his points score of last week, was John Gibson who beat Gordon Shaw on the countback.
Belated thanks to Owen Swift for his birthday drinks which were gratefully received.

20 played today in excellent weather for the time of year. The sun was warm but kept darting behind the clouds and a slight breeze disappeared after 2.00 pm. Local lad John Gibson won with 40 points followed by Gordon Shaw with 38. We will keep an eye on the weather with regard to the day we decide to play off the green tee set.

Tuesday 22nd Oct 2024
A bright, sunny day with a slight southwesterly breeze saw 26 compete today. Second was Harry Wright with 35 points, one point behind the best performance of the day from Eddie Varah.
Thanks to Jim Johnson for sharing his birthday celebrations with us all at the bar.

Thursday 17th Oct 24
What was forecast to be a sunny day turned out to be a windy day with the occasional squally shower. The weather obviously had its effect on us with the best score of the day a 34 from Martin Foreacre just beating Bob Fletton who had a 33 points. This was round 7 of the Autumn League and well supported with 27 taking part.

Tuesday 15th October 2024 AGM
The postponed Texas Scramble took place today with an early start of 9.00 to allow us to have our AGM at 2.00
Clark Black, David Blain and Jon Derry won with a 58.9 net (5.1 handicap) ie gross 64.
After many years of loyal and constructive service on the Sandpiper Committee, Joe Campbell, David Wood and Brian Taylor all retired at the AGM. They received a hearty round of thanks for all the work they have put into making the Sandpipers a success and an enjoyable experience.
Arthur Thompson and David Houldridge were elected as Hon Sec and member respectively.
Thursday 10th October 24
22 played in round 6 of the Autumn League. Jim Shaw had a great round, winning with 42 points ( which I understand cut his Course Handicap by 3 shots ) Peter Taylor also had a good round coming second with 36 points.

Thursday 3rd October 24
Round 5 of the Autumn League was played today in very enjoyable weather. Bright sunshine and a slight easterly breeze. These conditions brought out two excellent winning scores. Tim Herbert first with 42 and Gilmour McKellar 2nd with 41 points. 25 took part in total and 6 of them had 36 or more points.
Next Tuesday is a Texas Scramble which will start at the usual time of 11.00 from the Green Tees.

Brindley Salver - Tuesday 1st October 24
13 teams of two took to the course to compete in the greensome Competition for the Brindley Salver. Clark Black kindly went out with the first pair as their marker. Handicaps were calculated as 60% of the lowest and 40% of the higher - added together and rounded up. Green and Yellow tees were used with comp entered on the yellow card as a medal competition. The sun stayed away and the easterly wind was still with us but this did not deter our winners Joe Campbell and Owen Swift who had a net 61, winning by one stroke from the next best score. No doubt the 2 they had on the 9th contributed to their winning score as it did to Owen winning the nearest the pin. (If you ask Owen he will gladly talk you through how he guided it towards the left hand bunkers, using their edges and slopes to eventually roll his ball to 3ft from the pin!)

Tuesday 17th September
Without a doubt one of the best days we have had to play golf at Silloth with glorious sunshine and no wind all day. Having one of his best days was Gilmour McKellar, winning with 40 points. Eddie Varah took second with 38 points after a countback. 21 took part. There was no official competition and 19 of those playing chose to complete General Play cards. Course Handicaps applied - players entered there score on the screen - then handed their cards into the lounge for order of merit decision. Their cards were then put into the box to be checked by the club handicap secretary.

Thursday 12th Sept 2024
The round today was effected by one horrible, heavy downpour that lasted 20 minutes. It was sandwiched by very pleasant sunny conditions for golf. The players that made the most of that were Peter Taylor and Jim Johnson both with 36 points but Peter winning on a better back 9.

Seniors Open 15th Aug 2024
The decision was taken at around 7.00 am, that due to the severe and worsening rain and wind, the event had to be cancelled. The system generated an e-mail to all entrants ( 154 ) but unfortunately a few ( approx 12 ) turned up due to the distance they were travelling. All entrants will receive a full refund. Due to other commitments, the event cannot take place at any other time this year. Thanks to all who support this event.

J W Banks Trophy
The words of Clark Black, our competition secretary, on WhatsApp. “Well done T.Bunn. So pleased it’s you as I can save some money on the engraving there.” and the words of some of his playing friends “ not again!”, were outnumbered by congratulations to Terry Bunn for winning with 35 points. Brian Taylor was second ( again ) with 34 points. The weather was very disappointing with rain showers and gusts of 30 mph. However 21 struggled round.
Thanks to birthday boy Roger Cutts who came along at the end and bought us a celebration drink.

Walters Cup - Greensome
A successful Greensome, in pleasant conditions, was organised by Clark Black in which 22 took part. Not only did Clark stand down and play as a marker for a two ball, but he organised a nearest the pin at the 9th with a sleeve of balls as the prize. We thank Clark for his contribution today. Steve Whitehead won nearest the pin and a pairing of Bob Finlinson and David Frith won the competition with 44 points which was 4 points more than the nearest in the pack. ( they both lose 2 shots)

Very good result against a strong Brampton team and in somewhat poor weather conditions, 4 all draw, well done guys not lost a match so far 🙌🙌.
Looking forward:
Next Tuesday 11th June, The Walters Cup, Greensome format or as they say "don't say sorry format!". Always a good competition with interesting results. Just remember some of those great Ryder Cup games.
Next Thursday, 13th June, home match against Powfoot GC. Proving to be a wee bit of a problem selection wise. Fortunately, big Joe Holmes stepped in to cover a previous withdrawal, however, yesterday further 2 players have withdrawn, Grant (injury) and Jim Johnson (other commitments), now 2 players short and with no reserves not looking good! Anyone available please let me know ASAP 🏌️♂️🏌️🏌️♂️, 3 or 4 players would be great👉YOUR TEAM NEEDS YOU👈

John Norton Trophy Result
Constant wind in mid 20's with gusts over 30 mph did not put 16 hardy souls off competing for the John Norton Trophy. Neither did the very sharp showers that blew from the north west. The conditions were not conducive to great golf but the man who now has his name on the trophy for 2024 is Brian Taylor with a stronger back nine (wind assisted 21 points) giving him a total of 34 points (Sandpiper -2 to 10). A not so close second, with 31 points, was Terry Bunn. ( Sandpiper -1 to 12 ).

The final results are visible in the link opposite "Thursday League 1-10" and are the start of our Summer comp which takes us to the 30th August to complete. Congratulations also go to Joe Campbell for coming second with 33 points. Dave Atherton shone by winning by 4 clear points. I understand the weather was favourable but I believe the stamina and spirits of some, after their away day to Scotland yesterday, were at a low ebb.

Sandpiper Draw Rules
Following a recent committee meeting it was agreed to remind all Sandpipers of our Draw Rules.
Sandpiper Draw Rules
Extract from our rules and regulations:
'Currently 14 competitions are held each year which are Named Trophy Qualifying Competitions, played off WHS handicaps and rules, and entered through the computer system as qualifying for WHS handicapping purposes. These qualifying competitions are played as 3-balls unless numbers exceed 24 members, in which case, 4-balls are played. All competitions are drawn 10 minutes before tee-off on the morning of the competition. Late entry is allowed at the back of the draw.’
For clarity:
1. The draw should be made by the Handicap Secretary, or failing that, by any other member of the Committee present.
2. The draw should be made such that the available tee times are efficiently used. The 10-minute tee slot should be adhered to where appropriate.
3. The draw must not be made more than 10 minutes before the first tee time.
4. If, as a result of a high turnout, we are able to use the 10.50 tee-time, then a preliminary draw will be made to draw out the first 4-ball only from the balls already in the draw. All other balls remain in the bag for the usual draw at the usual time.

Everyone was delighted to see Joe Penrice back in the fold who thanked everyone for his 90th birthday card and invited us all to celebrate in the lounge afterwards.

Thursday 25th April
Our course was in EXCELLENT condition today and the sun was shining. 23 registered and played. Top of the Sandpiper heap was Eddie Varah (losing 4 shots ) with 38 points beating Malcolm Platts ( losing 3 shots ) into 2nd on a countback. The Spring Thursday League table is quite tight at the top with 3 games to go. It is good to hear that Gerry Fisher is feeling quite "chirpy" after his recent op. We wish him and our other golfing pals speedy recovery from their current health challenges. Next Tuesday we compete for the John Todd Shield.

Tuesday 23rd April
Match v Seascale Away
Congratulations Sandpipers Team, very good away win 3.5 to 4.5, continuing the good start to the match season. Sunny conditions with a cool breeze blowing down the course, friendly atmosphere, good food and a win what more could you want? Warm breeze and better greens maybe? Greens not at their best and probably favoured the home team more than us, but overall a good day out. Next match Carlisle away, which will be testing both in condition of the course and opponents, make sure you get your name down on the entry sheet. Once again great win.

John Cooper pairs trophy
17 players took part in the re-arranged John Cooper Pairs Trophy. It was played in very challenging, cold, wet and windy conditions from start to finish. As we had an odd number at the start, Clark Black kindly stood down from entering the competition but acted as the marker for the pair who turned out to be the winners. Terry Bunn ( yes him again!) and Steve Whitehead won on a countback with 69 points between them. They both lose 2 shots. Thanks to Dave Atherton for providing drinks to celebrate his birthday. We have our away match at Seascale next Tuesday 23rd April with first tee time of 9.30 a.m.
Tuesday, 16 April 2024
George Doughty Trophy
In bright sunshine 23 players registered to compete for the George Doughty Trophy. John Parker came out on top with 39 points ( losing 2 shots) and Jim Johnson was runner up with 36 Losing 1 shot. A two on the 3rd hole for Howard Foster was very worthy of note ( Drive and 9 iron).

Match result v Carlisle GC
Decent weather if a little windy at times, course in good condition considering recent and present weather conditions, the comments from Red Squirrels ' no mud, shoes and clubs clean, pleasure to play in the dry '. Even if the result was not in their favour they enjoyed themselves after a wet and miserable winter on their own course.
The result, great win for us 6 to 2, super start to the match season lets hope it continues. We have a match against Seascale away 23rd April (team on noticeboard) and the return match against Carlisle 13th May - hopefully their course will be improved - entry list will be on noticeboard next Tuesday.
Thanks for everyone's great efforts yesterday, particularly Martin and Tom for stepping in at the last minute covering late withdrawals.

Tuesday 2nd April
Two players had 39 Sandpiper points today. John Wraight 1st with best back nine and Terry Bunn 2nd. Pleasant conditions for golf and 22 played today.
In case anybody did not notice, from 01-04-24, everybody playing the yellow Course at Silloth had their Handicap reduced by two shots. The change comes about with the addition of Course Rating minus Par ( CR - PAR) as part of the calculation of converting your WHS index to your Course Handicap. The new Course Handicap boards are up on the starters hut.
That calculation is now
Handicap Index x (Slope Rating* /113) + (CR** - PAR**) = Course Handicap ( rounded)
*Silloth Slope Rating is still currently 131 **CR is 70.4 *** Par is 72 diff = -1.6 ( 2 )

Thursday 28th March
Having lost the last two Thursday comps to rain, this morning was not looking promising, however the day turned out to be very pleasant including a reduction in the strength of the wind by the time we teed off. Clark Black came out top of the 14 who played. His 38 Sandpiper points lost him 4 shots. Gordon Shaw ( Jim's young brother ) came second with 34 points losing 1 shot. As the clocks go forward this weekend we will get one hours less rain!

Thursday 7th March
Our efforts in 2023 to have more of our members register acceptable scores ( previously called Qualifying scores) have been congratulated by the Club. The increase in numbers attending on Thursdays was also very satisfying. Today saw the first Thursday of the new season with the start of the Spring League.
21 registered to play. Dave Atherton came out tops with 39 points and Steve Whitehead was runner up with 38.
We were advised today that Woody is in hospital and we all wish him a speedy recovery. I am told his body is covered in wires for monitoring purposes but he is feeling fine. I hope that any sudden peaks in his printouts are all "pretty nurse" related.
