Thursday 28th September

Challenging conditions today. Twenty one played with Bob Finlinson's 39 points well out in front (17 - 13), Jonathon Derry second with 34 (15 - 14).
Next Tuesday is the Brindley Salver Greensomes with the first fourball teeing off at 9.00am after the draw at around 8.50am. The AGM will follow, probably about 2.00pm.
Update: Apologies for not mentioning Clive Milburn who invited everyone to a drink to celebrate his umpteenth birthday.

Tuesday 26th September

Today's forecast was correct, cloud, strong winds, rain, heavy rain then bright skies. Twenty took part but not that many completed the round. David Blain won with 36 points (18 - 15) and Harry Wright second with 32 (31 - 30). Three didn't put money in the prize pool so hopefully they'll reimburse the kitty.
Congratulations and thanks to Jim Shaw for inviting us to celebrate his 81st birthday.

Annual General Meeting

Just a reminder that our AGM is on Tuesday 3rd October following the Brindley Salver Greensomes (weather permitting).
Please notify Brian Taylor of intended proposals so they can be added to the agenda.

Thursday 21st September

Philip Curran won with 43 points (22 - 16), Gerry Fisher second, well back with 33 (15 - 14) and most of the remaining eighteen scores were pretty dire with myself coming last.

Hexham is Open

As of 7.00am 20/09/2023. Buggies allowed.

Champion Sandpiper

A close game by all accounts with David Frith overcoming strong opposition by Gordon Shaw on the 18th.

Hexham

For those not in the WhatsApp loop, Hexham GC is closed all day today with a course inspection at 7.00am tomorrow. John recommends nobody sets out until it is confirmed the course is open and of particular concern to the less mobile that buggies are allowed.

Thursday 14th September

Twenty three played in autumnal conditions with no outstanding scores. Tim Herbert came first with 37 (25 - 22) and David Frith runner up with 36 (21 - 19). Willie Smith informs me that the joint treatment isn't working well enough for him to play yet but sends everyone best wishes and intends to attend the  AGM.

George Wright Trophy

Twenty four played today for the last individual trophy of the season. Jim Shaw came first with 40 points losing 2 shots and runner up David Frith's 39 costing him one shot.
For those who remember David McCrum, he's still getting out and about with assistance but feeling the effects of not being as mobile as he used to be.

80th Birthday

Please add this to Tuesday's blog.

The other 35 players extend their thanks to Woody for buying a round of drinks (gulp!) on the occasion of his 80th? birthday. We believe he went home early for a lie down after seeing the bill.

Thursday 7th September

Twenty four played in humid conditions with twenty two entering qualifying cards for Gilmour's accumulator competition. Eddie Varah finished well clear with 45 points (19 - 12), Arthur Thompson second with 39 (30 - 27).
Next Tuesday is our last singles competition of 2023, the George Wright Trophy.

Saxons v Celts

Fortunately I had to leave before the depressing news came in that our last two pairings lost their matches resulting in a draw and the Celts retaining the trophy. Well done John Parker for coping with late and unexpected arrivals that meant 36 took part.
The late Alan Heywood's Sandpiper apparel which was hardly (if ever) worn is being offered by his widow. Shirt XL, Sweater 46 chest, short-sleeved jumper 44 chest. All as new.
If interested contact Brian Taylor.
