Tuesday 19th December

John Derry 36 points (13 - 10), Clark Black 34 (22 - 21). Strong winds and a lot of whinging . Gilmour.

Thursday, 14 December 2023

Thursday 14th December

Today's conditions weren't too challenging especially for Brian Taylor with 42 points (18 - 12). Arthur Thompson came second with 39 (27 - 24).
Important notice. our normal Tuesday 26th December falls on Boxing Day and clashes with the Club's Carr's Trophy competition. It has therefore been decided to give our hour back to the club. Anyone wishing to play should use the BRS booking system.

Tuesday 12th December

Apologies for late update. Terry Bunn won with 37 points, John Wraight second with 35.

Xmas Get-together

Twenty eight managed to make it to the luncheon which seemed to be enjoyed by all present. Quizmaster Bob Finlinson baffled most of us with his challenging questions. The postponed Texas Scramble will be held at our normal start time on a day when the weather looks more promising.

Tuesday, 5 December 2023

Thursday Xmas Events

Due to an adverse weather forecast and possibility of play being cancelled or restricted, the Texas Scramble has been postponed and the meal and social activities brought forward to 1.00pm.
Unfortunate, but as loads of prizes have been purchased for golf it would be better to pick a day when more would be likely to compete.

Saturday, 2 December 2023

Thursday 30th November

I'm informed that fifteen turned up to play in hard frost conditions on the winter course. Dave Atherton took advantage of the rules to win with 42 points and only get pulled two shots playing off half handicap (15 - 13). Terry Bunn one point behind lost one shot (18 - 17).
Will it be possible for those who intend to play next Thursday at 9.00am to give prior notice as it may affect the time we start our Xmas get together.

Tuesday, 28 November 2023

Tuesday 28th November

Twenty six enjoyed sunny conditions and everyone got in before the light failed. Harry Wright decided to try the green tees and won with 38 points which cost him four shots off  his already reduced handicap (28 - 24). David Low came second on countback (21 - 18).

Sunday, 26 November 2023

Thursday 23rd November

Driven rain early on forced my retirement but thirteen others persisted with Bob Finlinson returning a winning 35 points (17 - 15) and Terry Bunn second (19 - 18).

Tuesday, 21 November 2023

Tuesday 21st November

Twenty nine played today and it was a good job it wasn't cloudy as the last fourball just scraped in without needing torches. Jim Johnson took first place with 40 points (26 - 21) and Joe Holmes second with 37 (19 - 17).
John Dixon's funeral will take place on Friday 1st December 12 noon at Distington crematorium.

Amendments to WHS from April

For anyone who hasn't clicked on the  podcast link in the recent NCG email it's well worth spending an hour of torture listening to all the proposed changes. All I can say is NIGHTMARE.

John Dixon RIP

Sad to report that a former long time member has passed away at the age of 96. John was a good friend of the late Geoff Waite and played well into his eighties. Details of his funeral arrangements will be published in due course.

Thursday, 16 November 2023

Thursday 16th November

Not very often someone gets cut nine shots in one outing but Jim Shaw managed it today with 49 points (33 - 24). Dave Atherton managed second place on countback with 38 (18 - 15). Twenty five played in ideal conditions

Thursday 9th November

Heavy intermittent showers spoiled an otherwise decent day. Fifteen set out with the last group struggling to get back in daylight.
Howard Foster won with 34 points on count back (12 - 10), Steve Whitehead 2nd (13 - 12).
A sheet to append names for the Xmas meal is on the notice board together with a menu. Another sheet for pre-selection of choice will be posted nearer the event.
Congratulations to Eddie Varah who has won the last of Gilmour's competitions for this year.

Tuesday 7th November

Close at the top from twenty six players in near ideal conditions, Steve Whitehead taking first prize with 37 points (16 - 13) and Howard Foster runner up with 36 ( 14 - 12). Gerry Fisher invited all those who stayed for the after proceedings to celebrate his birthday which was much appreciated.

Christmas Texas Scramble and Lunch

First thing to note that the fixture has been moved from Tuesday 5th December to Thursday 7th. Secondly a list will be put on the notice board for those who wish to order our Xmas lunch which this year will cost £24. A menu will also be on the board and at a later date a list to pre-order from the menu.

Tuesday, 31 October 2023

Tuesday 31st October

A raw east wind made scoring difficult on the back nine but not for Gerry Fisher with 40 points (16 - 11) or for Garry Blackley with 39 (20 - 17). Twenty six played and those that stayed behind were treated by Owen Swift who celebrated his birthday.

Saturday, 28 October 2023

Tuesday 31st First Tee Time

Please note that our first tee time is 10.50am and will remain so until spring 2024.

Friday, 27 October 2023

Thursday 26th October

John Wraight is the closest we've had to a Sandpiper playing off scratch for a long time. An excellent 40 points sees his Sandpiper handicap reduced from 6 to 1. Gilmour McKellar will be disappointed to be beaten on countback and lose four shots for 40% of £18.

Tuesday, 24 October 2023

Tuesday 24th October

Mild and calm autumn conditions today for twenty two competitors. Tim Herbert had 38 points with a better back nine for second place (24 - 21) and Gilmour McKellar excelled with a winning 41 Points (20 - 15).

Thursday, 19 October 2023

Thursday 19th October

Seventeen enjoyed a bonus outing with only an hour or so of light drizzle. David Frith won with 37 points (21 - 18) and Joe Holmes second with 36 (21 - 19). On the new result sheet, 24 of the 45 regular attenders are playing below their club handicaps.

Tuesday, 17 October 2023

Tuesday 17th October

Thirty three turned out today, possibly because the next few days look terrible. Malcolm Platts won with 37 points (27 - 24), Dave Atherton second with 35 (19 - 18). A lot of subs came in today and a reminder that the 30th November is the last day to retain membership.

Thursday, 12 October 2023

Thursday 12th October

Much calmer today. Clive Milburn won with 42 points ( 22 - 16) and Jon Derry second with 39 (14 - 11).
Anyone interested in seeing the minutes of our AGM can use the link in the side panel.

Wednesday, 11 October 2023

Tuesday 10th October

Twenty one set off despite the threat of rain that never really materialised which was a good job considering the strong wind. The winners of the Texas Scramble were Brian Taylor, Arthur Thompson and David Houldridge who were docked two shots each

Tuesday, 3 October 2023

Brindley Salver Result

A brutal wind made the outward nine difficult. Joe Holmes and David Blain won with 39 points, the best of twelve drawn pairs. The AGM brought up several points that will be published in due course, the one that can be addressed immediately is avoiding "slow play" and groups bunching up as a consequence.

Thursday, 28 September 2023

Thursday 28th September

Challenging conditions today. Twenty one played with Bob Finlinson's 39 points well out in front (17 - 13), Jonathon Derry second with 34 (15 - 14).
Next Tuesday is the Brindley Salver Greensomes with the first fourball teeing off at 9.00am after the draw at around 8.50am. The AGM will follow, probably about 2.00pm.
Update: Apologies for not mentioning Clive Milburn who invited everyone to a drink to celebrate his umpteenth birthday.

Tuesday, 26 September 2023

Tuesday 26th September

Today's forecast was correct, cloud, strong winds, rain, heavy rain then bright skies. Twenty took part but not that many completed the round. David Blain won with 36 points (18 - 15) and Harry Wright second with 32 (31 - 30). Three didn't put money in the prize pool so hopefully they'll reimburse the kitty.
Congratulations and thanks to Jim Shaw for inviting us to celebrate his 81st birthday.

Friday, 22 September 2023

Annual General Meeting

Just a reminder that our AGM is on Tuesday 3rd October following the Brindley Salver Greensomes (weather permitting).
Please notify Brian Taylor of intended proposals so they can be added to the agenda.

Thursday 21st September

Philip Curran won with 43 points (22 - 16), Gerry Fisher second, well back with 33 (15 - 14) and most of the remaining eighteen scores were pretty dire with myself coming last.

Wednesday, 20 September 2023

Hexham is Open

As of 7.00am 20/09/2023. Buggies allowed.

Tuesday, 19 September 2023

Champion Sandpiper

A close game by all accounts with David Frith overcoming strong opposition by Gordon Shaw on the 18th.

Hexham

For those not in the WhatsApp loop, Hexham GC is closed all day today with a course inspection at 7.00am tomorrow. John recommends nobody sets out until it is confirmed the course is open and of particular concern to the less mobile that buggies are allowed.

Thursday, 14 September 2023

Thursday 14th September

Twenty three played in autumnal conditions with no outstanding scores. Tim Herbert came first with 37 (25 - 22) and David Frith runner up with 36 (21 - 19). Willie Smith informs me that the joint treatment isn't working well enough for him to play yet but sends everyone best wishes and intends to attend the  AGM.

Tuesday, 12 September 2023

George Wright Trophy

Twenty four played today for the last individual trophy of the season. Jim Shaw came first with 40 points losing 2 shots and runner up David Frith's 39 costing him one shot.
For those who remember David McCrum, he's still getting out and about with assistance but feeling the effects of not being as mobile as he used to be.

Monday, 11 September 2023

80th Birthday

Please add this to Tuesday's blog.

The other 35 players extend their thanks to Woody for buying a round of drinks (gulp!) on the occasion of his 80th? birthday. We believe he went home early for a lie down after seeing the bill.

Brian

Thursday, 7 September 2023

Thursday 7th September

Twenty four played in humid conditions with twenty two entering qualifying cards for Gilmour's accumulator competition. Eddie Varah finished well clear with 45 points (19 - 12), Arthur Thompson second with 39 (30 - 27).
Next Tuesday is our last singles competition of 2023, the George Wright Trophy.

Wednesday, 6 September 2023

Saxons v Celts

Fortunately I had to leave before the depressing news came in that our last two pairings lost their matches resulting in a draw and the Celts retaining the trophy. Well done John Parker for coping with late and unexpected arrivals that meant 36 took part.
The late Alan Heywood's Sandpiper apparel which was hardly (if ever) worn is being offered by his widow. Shirt XL, Sweater 46 chest, short-sleeved jumper 44 chest. All as new.
If interested contact Brian Taylor.

Thursday, 31 August 2023

Thursday 31st August

Twelve of today's twenty six players scored 36 points or better but Gordon Shaw's 44 points was well ahead of the field (15 - 8) followed by David Low's 41 (22 - 18). Two players each got a couple of shots back.

Wednesday, 30 August 2023

Tuesday 29th August

Twenty seven was a good turnout and the threatening rain didn't materialise. Peter Taylor scored a winning 39 points (15 - 11), Robert Fletton second with 36 (28 - 26).
On Thursday (to avoid any cock ups) please make sure that Sandpiper handicaps are shown on both your own card and the one you are marking and award points accordingly.

Friday, 25 August 2023

Thursday 24th Amended Result

Unfortunately Tommy applied his full handicap instead of his reduced Sandpiper allowance to his score which gave him 34 points and elevates  Joe Campbell to second place with the best back nine of three 36s and a 2 shot handicap reduction. The result sheet will be adjusted accordingly.

Thursday, 24 August 2023

Thursday 24th August

Tony Davis ended a two year drought with a 43 points win (24 - 18) and Tommy Neilly second with 38 (34 - 31).  Nineteen played in blustery but sunny conditions. Thank you to Gordon Shaw who invited us all to help him celebrate his birthday in the lounge.

Wednesday, 23 August 2023

Saunders Trophy Result

A close finish with Bob Finlinson's 36 (17 - 15) one point ahead of John Wraight with his third consecutive podium finish (3 - 2).

Seniors' Open

I'm informed that visiting competitors were very complimentary about the organisation of the competition so congratulations to all the Sandpiper volunteers for their efforts in making it a successful  day.

A win is a win, even by the smallest of margins (4.5 - 3.5) against Penrith at home. Played in mostly sunny and breezy conditions.
Next Tuesday we play for the Banks Trophy.

Thursday, 3 August 2023

Thursday 3rd August

Two surprisingly modest scores took the money today, Brian Taylor's 37 (17 - 14) beating Vince Ross on countback (12 - 10). Vince also along with David Houldridge  invited us to celebrate their birthdays in the lounge afterwards.
At a brief committee meeting it was agreed to instigate a waiting list for membership due to the high numbers wishing to play regularly and limited tee slots available to us and John Parker has been co-opted to assist Joe with responsibility for team selection.

Tuesday, 1 August 2023

Carrick Trophy Result

David Houldridge had an outstanding day scoring 43 points to win the trophy ahead of Lynn Hopkins' 40. Thirty one played in pleasant condition which were nothing like the forecast.

Joe is still one short for the away match at Workington next Monday.

Twenty seven of us suffered a nasty shower early on in the round followed by a strong west wind. Ian Hind won with 42 points (28 - 22) and Bob Finlinson second with 38 (16 - 13). Next Tuesday is likely to be quiet with quite a few Sandpipers over in the North East.

Anderson Cup Result

Just nineteen took part  today, perhaps the threat of rain or just five clubs kept numbers down. The decision to make it a non qualifier saved a lot of handicaps but Gerry Fisher (12 - 10) and Steve Whitehead (16 - 15) didn't need any help with 40 and 39 points respectively. Tomorrow our team visit Brampton for the return match.

Monday, 19 June 2023

I'm informed Willie Smith has mobility problems and receiving treatment, we all wish him well.

Thursday 18th May

Just eighteen played today which is not surprising considering this week's busy schedule. Dave Atherton won with 35 points (15 - 13) and Terry Bunn second with 34 (16 - 15).
Gilmour's 10 week aggregate was also decided today with the result to be published in due time.

Tuesday, 16 May 2023

Tuesday 16th May

Just twenty one played today due to the busy schedule. David Blain came first with 39 points (22 - 18) and myself second with the best back nine of several 37s (24 - 22).
A reminder that only four weeks remain for the first round of the championship knockouts to be played (15th June).

A four game each draw on Monday at Carlisle but in true play-off mode Silloth win 9 - 7 on aggregate. Truth is Silloth should be relegated due to the pathetic speech performance of their captain!!

Sandpiper Membership

Due to the pressure of active members wishing to play, our allocated tee slots are barely enough so membership is now CLOSED for the foreseeable future. The Club secretary cannot allocate more tee times so both he and the professional are aware of the situation.

Cooper Trophy Result

It pains me to say ( not ) that the two who came first and second on points were also drawn together, Vince Ross and Gilmour McKellar. I think the phrase “ a country mile “ was quoted by someone who was a bit fed up waiting as we were the last group in.

Thursday Carlisle Match

A quick correction, on Thursday we have two slots at 11.50am and 12 noon. For those not in the team please use these times as the course is fully booked. Use the WhatsApp group to register so we can avoid disappointment.

Tuesday, 28 March 2023

Tuesday 28th March

Despite the inclement conditions it was decided to proceed with the championship qualifier and luckily the drizzle stopped after a while. Fifteen played with thirteen wishing to go into the knockout rounds. A draw according to R&A rules will be made in due course. David Frith won the day's money with 37 points (20 - 18) and the RNLI charity box came second as Gilmour and Tim were unsure who should take the cash with uncertainty in interpreting our rules.

Friday, 24 March 2023

Thursday 23rd March

I'm informed that twenty one played in very windy conditions. Eddie Varah took first prize with 36 points (18 - 15) and Vince Ross second with 33 (12 - 11)

Wednesday, 22 March 2023

Tuesday 21st March

David Houldridge won today with 39 points (22 - 18) in chilly and windy conditions. David Low came second with 36 (19 - 17). Thirty two played, and looking at my sheet if all our fairly regular players had turned out there would have been forty seven teeing off at four minute intervals.
Next Tuesday is the Championship qualifying round for the top sixteen entries to go into the knockout stages. Those who don't wish to enter the Championship should notify me on the day although everyone should log in as a handicap qualifying round.

Keighley Cup Result

First of all, thank you to Arthur Thompson for inviting all the twenty players plus me to celebrate his recent birthday. Conditions altered dramatically towards the end of the rounds as shown  in the photo.

The Club diaries aren't out yet so a reminder that the Bernard Keighley Cup will be held next Tuesday 14th March. The format is a bogey competition and entries are via the touchscreen.

Thursday, 9 March 2023

Thursday 9th March

Normally I would not make a report when less than twelve play but it was worth turning up just to listen to the diverse, well balanced and forcefully proposed rules for taking part in Gilmour's accumulator on the winter short course. Hopefully someone will provide definitive written rules for future use.

Use of Personal Buggies

Today we received notification from the Club that buggies could not be used on the course. The Greens Chairman has clarified that this only applies to rental buggies from the Club and that properly insured personal buggies can be used at all times except when the course is closed.

Texas Scramble Result

Played in exceptionally calm and warm conditions for the time of year seven teams of four played using 10% of combined yellow tee handicaps. This resulted in a much closer contest with only three points separating  top from bottom place. Bob Finlinson, Terry Bunn, Joe Campbell and Owen Swift won with 58.7 and each received a well deserved two shot handicap reduction. Quite a few players also got shots back.
This Thursday is the start of Gilmour's 10 session accumulator for those who enter for a qualifying score and runs as a background extra to our normal meetings.

Sunday, 5 March 2023

Summer Start Time

Please note that we now commence at 11.00am. Also check the link to the weekly result sheet as several handicaps have been adjusted since last Tuesday.

Thursday, 2 March 2023

Thursday 2nd March

Much warmer for today's twenty four players. Terry Bunn's magic putting stick (on the front 9) gave him a winning 39 points (16 - 12) and Philip Curran second with 37 (20 - 18).
Next Tuesday is our Spring Texas Scramble which we will play with either 3 or 4 balls (not both). I've opted to drop out should it make this possible.

Tuesday, 28 February 2023

Tuesday 28th February

A biting cold wind from the east for the thirty three who took part today. 39 points wasn't enough for Philip Curran to win (23 - 20), that place went to John Wraight  with 40 (11 - 6).
Good to see Joe Penrice back in action but unfortunately Ian Porter doesn't feel fit enough to play so has given up his club membership.

New Result Sheet

If you check the link in the margin for 'Weekly Result Sheet' it's been updated to start afresh with many playing below their yellow tee handicaps. These are correct as of today and several have been adjusted following cards submitted for handicap yesterday.

Thursday, 23 February 2023

Thursday 23rd February

Welcome to another new member Tim Brockbank who made the numbers up to twenty five playing today. Serial winner Dave Atherton must have thought he was in with a chance scoring 42 points (18 - 13) but Jim Shaw had other ideas with 43 (28 - 22).

Sandpipers Web Site

Following popular demand the website is up and running with matches and competitions for this year together with photos of last years prize giving. If anyone has a suitable more up to date photo to replace the old one on the index page please let me know.

Tuesday, 21 February 2023

Tuesday 21st February

A day for John Parker to remember, not for the cold blustery conditions but for his winning 42 points (26 - 20) and the other twenty five players helping him to celebrate another birthday. Martin Fouracre came second with 38 (26 - 23).
Those who remember Edward Harle will be sorry to learn that he has resigned his club membership due to mobility problems but sends his regards to everybody. Bob Finlinson's electric PowaCaddy is playing up and he would like to purchase a second hand trolley if there is one laying unused anywhere.

David Barnes

Just heard sad news that David Barnes died last Tuesday. He was 89.
According to Keswick Reminder, his funeral will be at Thornthwaite Church at 12.30 on Monday 27 February.
Charles
David was one of the original 'Trips to Spain' (PIGS) Sandpipers in 2003 and long time member.

Friday, 17 February 2023

Thursday 16th February

Gordon Shaw joined us today as another new member making it thirty who played in cold and windy conditions. Gilmour McKellar took first prize with 36 points (17 - 14) and Gerry Fisher second with 35 (11 - 10).
Willie Smith tried playing off the green tees today and has decided to join Joe in making this his permanent choice. The slope index, reduced handicap, no par fives and added long par threes levels up the pleasure in being able to reach fairways from the tee.

Tuesday, 14 February 2023

Tuesday 14th February

Unexpected showers and cloud spoiled today's play for the thirty two who turned out. Four got two shots each back. Tommy Neilly managed second place with 39 points (39 - 36) and Roger Coy the clear winner scoring 43 points (29 - 23).

Thursday, 9 February 2023

Thursday 9th February

Yet another new member to welcome, Howard Foster made the number up to twenty who played in bright conditions. Gilmour McKellar won with 37 points (20 - 17) and Gerry Fisher second with 33 (12 - 11).

Tuesday, 7 February 2023

Tuesday 7th February

Welcome to two new members, David Blain and today's winner Dave Atherton (23 - 18) who joined the other twenty five (or was it twenty six?) to play in cold and cloudy conditions scoring 38 points. Tim Herbert came second with 36 (21 - 19).
Gilmour's competition will commence on Thursday 9th March and will run for three separate sessions of ten games each through the summer. Points can be accumulated by those who register official handicap qualifying cards on the day.

Thursday, 2 February 2023

Thursday 2nd February

Twenty one played today including new member John Derry. David Houldridge  had a round he won't forget, birdie 2s the 6th, 9th and 12th but only managing par on the 16th. His round of 41 (23 - 18) in windy and cold conditions was 4 points ahead of second placed Clark Black (16 - 14). Four players got two shots each back.

Allonby Road Closure

Monday 13th February, 8am - 5pm. Closed from Allonby to past Salta  Road end for putting in a road crossing connecting the coastal path.

Tuesday 31st January

Nineteen turned up but I chickened out due to the cold and windy conditions. Of the remaining eighteen Tim Herbert and Bob Finlinson both scored 28 points, Tim winning on the back nine. Five of those who played got two shots each back.
Jim Gilfillan has been in touch and advises he is recovering well from his operation and looks forward to starting back soon.

Thursday Handicap Adjustments

From those who entered the Sandpiper qualifying competition, Gerry Fisher and Clark Black have lost a shot from their yellow tee allowance whilst myself, Joe Campbell and Arthur Thompson have gained a shot.

Thursday, 26 January 2023

Thursday 26th January

Near summer conditions for the lucky 20 who played today. John Wraight and Owen Swift have served their time thus get two shots back. Gerry Fisher won with 39 points (16 - 12) and Peter Taylor second with 37 (11 - 9).
Two other members aren't able to join us at the moment, John Gibson is undergoing a course of treatment and Tommy Neilly is at home looking after Faye. Those who knew David McCrum will be saddened to learn he is really struggling health wise. Willie Smith is however in reasonable health and only other commitments have kept him away since the Texas Scramble.

Tuesday, 24 January 2023

Tuesday 24th January

Twenty one took part today in grey conditions that got colder as the day went on.
Bob Finlinson won with 38 points (17 - 13) and Eddie Varah second with 37 (17 - 15) .
I'm informed that Joe Penrice and Willie Smith aren't enjoying the best of health and we haven't seen Jim Gilfillan so we wish them all well.

Sandpiper WhatsApp Group

Gilmour has formed a WhatsApp group so anyone can comment on a bulletin board for such as delays, course conditions etc which everyone can see almost instantly. He is currently adding WhatsApp users using his own contacts so anyone wishing to join should give their contact details to him in person. Access to the group is currently by request only.

Thursday 19th January

Unfortunately I had other commitments and missed another bright day although played on the winter course. Nineteen played with two more good scores, Tim Herbert winning with 47 points and Colin Campbell coming second with 44 both losing 2 and 1 shots respectively.

Tuesday, 17 January 2023

Tuesday 17th January

Fifteen turned out today in bright sunlight but on the winter course due to the overnight frost.
Despite playing of half handicaps Steve Whitehead won with 47 points (13 - 11) and Clark Black second with 45 (17 - 16), two excellent scores.

Green Tees

Not the best of starts to the new year weatherwise but good wishes to everyone for 2023.
Use of green tees
It was agreed that in inclement weather we could decide on the day to use the green tees.
It has been suggested that those who feel unable to compete due to length of carries etc. may decide to permanently use the green tees, as the slope index will compensate for the loss of distance. Hopefully this would make our days more inclusive without affecting our handicap system. Please advise if you permanently wish to use the green tees.

Harry Wright

For those who haven't heard, Harry's wife Rosetta passed away just after Christmas. A very sad time for the family but Harry has asked me to advise that the funeral will take place on Friday 13th January at Distington crematorium 12 noon with the wake afterwards at Hunday Manor for anyone who wishes attend.
