Tuesday 26th October

Sixteen of us set off into a westerly gale. Not surprisingly scoring was difficult and Eddie Varah's 31 was good enough for first place and Malcolm Platts 28 with the best back nine took second. Peter Taylor misplaced a New Zealand coin he uses for a ball marker the other day and has sentimental value so if anyone knows it's whereabouts please advise.

Thursday 21st October Results

John Wraight made a serious dent in his handicap with 38 points in today's fresh and chilly conditions. David Houldridge came second with a creditable 36 points. Twenty took part.
Arrangements have been made to update the engraving on our trophies so anyone having one at home is encouraged to return it urgently for presentation at our Xmas bash.

Temporary Greens

I'm informed that work on the greens isn't complete yet and that tomorrow we will play of normal tees to temporary greens. Also, for those travelling to Silloth via Maryport, from the 24th the road will be closed from Risehow turn off to the waste disposal centre to Grasslot followed by Grasslot to Lidl's. The road from the waste unit via the harbour and town centre will probably turn into a rat run.

Fairway Mats

The Club is making mats compulsory from the 1st November and the Sandpiper committee have agreed that as responsible members and to further protect the course we may start using them with immediate effect in our social events on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Until the Club's rule kicks in it will remain optional.

Thursday 14th October Result

Quite a few of today's sixteen players ended up demoralised after playing in a strong west wind. Only two scored better than 30 points, Gilmour McKellar with 33 and Arthur Thompson with 34.
Please return any trophies so we can get them engraved up to date ready for next season.

Tuesday 12th October Result

Another successful Texas Scramble thanks to Brian Taylor's organising skills and 23 competitors. Conditions were calm and sunny with Peter Taylor, Clive Milburn and myself returning a winning nett 59.33 and loss of two shots each.

Sandpiper Championship

Congratulations to Andrew on becoming the 2021 champion.

I have donated the £100 Sandpiper Championship prize to the Fight Bladder Cancer charity. Bladder Cancer affects about 10,000 new people in the UK every year and the treatment and consequences can be spread over many years. The charity aims to help research and provide support to sufferers. I know that this is a subject which will resonate with several current and former Sandpipers.

Thursday 7th October

Just thirteen played today when the strong north wind was the worst enemy with a little bit of damp thrown in. David Low won with 37 points and Antonio Gerbino second with 36. Please check your Sandpiper handicaps on our notice board before setting out. Next Tuesday we have a popular Texas Scramble.

Brindley Salver Result

Understandably, only five pairs went out in drizzle blasted by a north wind. Thank you to Willie Smith who volunteered to mark a card for the (odd) couple John Parker and Gilmour McKellar who won the Brindley Salver with 37 points.
Main points from the AGM were the team colours remain unchanged, Gilmour will run an eclectic next season on Thursdays to encourage higher numbers and the old chestnut of slow play discussed at length.
The minutes will be published in due course.
A reminder that the £5 subs are now due and it would help if anyone not wishing to renew membership would advise Jim.
