Silloth Past and Present

Something to watch:

Course Closed

Well that's golf down the pan for what looks like a good while. I think as a society all we can do now is keep in touch until we can play again.
If you have any news that will interest fellow Sandpipers please email it to me and I'll try to keep the blog going. Anything important I'll pass on through the bulk email. Send me your address if you wish to be added.
One big bit of news is that Joe celebrated a significant birthday last Sunday and we all wish him well.

Update

You will all have seen the latest information from the Club secretary regarding closure of facilities.
The course and the Pro's shop are to remain open and access to the toilets and hand washing facilities is being considered as it it not desirable for the locker room to be an area where people congregate.
It is assumed that us Sandpipers wish to carry on as a society albeit restrained by non contact procedures so it's a bit up in the air at the moment. Enough to say that if you turn up you will get a game though perhaps not in our usual format until things normalise.

Thursday 19th March

Bio-security measures introduced at the club today to limit virus transmission include removing rakes from bunkers and reducing the depth of the holes so flags need not be removed. Cards should not be exchanged for scoring and we should all be careful in handling items held by others.
Twenty took part today in glorious conditions, Mike Carter winning with 33 points and a better back nine than Clive Milburn. Several members have sensibly decided to limit personal contact by not attending the after proceedings in the lounge. Let's hope things improve before too long.

Forthcoming Matches

As expected, after consultation with the other clubs on our circuit, all matches until June have been cancelled. Other precautions should be taken when using the competition touch screen, ATMs and any other surface that the virus can remain active on for up to 72 hours. The Club Secretary has issued an email with comprehensive precautionary instructions.

Tuesday 17th March

The sunny start soon deteriorated to the degree that several of the fourteen starters walked in but those of us made of sterner stuff (?) persisted, myself winning with 35 points followed by Tom Borthwick with 29. Everyone observed the limited contact advice and on a serious note, our matches and closure of the clubhouse are under consideration. Stay Safe.

Tuesday 10th March

Looking out of the window this afternoon is like being in a different country to the one nine of us played in for the Bernard Keighley Cup. Colin Campbell played exceptionally well to win with a bogey score of -1, John Wraight second with -6. The wind got the better of the rest.
The sheet for our home match against Carlisle in April is on the notice board.

Thursday 5th March

Overnight frost cleared leaving perfect sunny conditions for the twenty competitors.
Clive Milburn and Ian Hind both had 34 points, Clive having the better back nine.

Tuesday 3rd March

Twenty three split into three's and fourballs for today's Texas Scramble competently organised by Brian Taylor. David Frith, Peter Taylor, Tommy Neilly and Joe Holmes split the £23 between them at the cost of two shots each.
A sheet is on the notice board for our first match of the season at home against Workington on Thursday 2nd April. Next Tuesday is our first qualifying competition, the Bernard Keighley Bogey.
