Eighteen travelled through poor road conditions to get round the course dry but windswept.
The 12th is out of commission due to the large lake in front of it and the 8th has a similar problem for those who can only make the front of the fairway.
Bob Finlinson won with 32 points and Tony Davis second, just one behind.
As there are theoretically only 34 par points available at the moment perhaps this should be the new lower limit for handicap reductions!
Happy New Year.

Greetings
Thursday's weather looks a bit grim so Seasonal Greetings to all.
Just a couple of notes - I assume that everyone whose email address is held by Silloth Golf Club will have received instructions how to log into the new web site. Howdidido is no longer used so members will have to check competition statistics through the Club's on line "member's area".
Also the ground is sodden and there are signs on down slopes that golfers have slipped.
We're all too old to be falling over so mind where you put your feet.

Tuesday 15th December
A surprising turnout of thirty made John Tudor's winning score of 36 very profitable. Brian Taylor came second with 35. The day was fairly calm and mild but the last fourball struggled to get in before the light failed at 4.00pm.
Our Secretary has published a notice regarding late payment of subscriptions and the consequences for entering competitions. In short, pay up by the end of December.

Thursday 10th December
Rather windy today with thirteen turning out. My 31 points was enough to win, Ian Hind was second with 29.
Just a reminder to be careful about walking on the paths as wet mud can be treacherous under foot and also be aware that clubs can shoot out of your bag and give you a black eye!!!

Tuesday 8th December
Our Christmas bash proved popular again with twenty three turning up (eventually) in spite of the unsettled weather forecast. Only one brief shower added to the windy conditions.
Geoff Waite again organised a superb prize table, David Low taking the first prize bottle of whiskey with 36 points after everyone enjoyed a three course lunch and coffee whilst puzzling over quiz questions assembled by Brian Taylor.
Our best wishes go to Andy Edwards who I understand has been hospitalised recently but good to see Les Heyes and Alan Proud able to join us.

Thursday 26th November
Gloomy conditions made following the ball difficult for the last fourball finishing at 3.30pm but twenty one enjoyed reasonably warm temperatures.
Harry Wright cleaned up with 39 points and Ian Hind second with 35.
Only five scores were thirty or better.

A field of twenty two made Jim Gilfillan's and Joe Campbell's winning scores worth the effort in the challenging windy conditions.

Thursday 12th November
David Barnes' 28 points was enough to win in today's extra strong wind followed by Joe Campbell with 26 which must be the two lowest winning scores in Sandpiper history. I think all seventeen players were just glad to get on the course after the recent rains.

Thursday 5th November
Drizzle and muggy today but our thirteen players got back in before the heavier rain started.
Sandy Tonner finished his season with a 34 points win, one ahead of Harry Wright.

Twenty four took advantage of today's mild and misty conditions plus David Firth who completed his third qualifying card which gives him a 17 handicap.
I surprised myself with a 37 point winning score, beating Joe Penrice by one.
Names are being taken for our Christmas Bottle Trot at 9.00am on Tuesday 8th December followed by Seasonal Fare and prize giving . A list for names and menu together with price will go on the notice board this week.

Tuesday 27th October
Twenty three struggled against a stiff easterly on the back nine plus David Frith who joined today and is currently getting three cards together for a handicap.
Geoff Waite had the best back nine of four 34s with David McCrum second.
Jim Johnson made a welcome return and was permitted to go out near the end of the field.
Next Tuesday our tee time reverts to 10.50am and I noted that there was barely enough light left to play at 4.30pm today.

I've been battling "man flu" this week so just a brief report. Twenty three played , David Low won with a sensible 35 points followed by Mike Mapleton with 33.

Thursday 15th October
The sun shone again and David McCrum and Roger Cutts came first and second out of nineteen. Good to see the return of both John Tudor and Willie Smith, and I understand Jim Johnson continues to make progress. Less fortunate is Ian Porter who is in Carlisle hospital for overnight observation after going to A&E this morning with tightness in the chest. Let's hope it's just a hiccup.

Twenty wasn't the ideal number for today's Texas Scramble but Brian Taylor organised the six teams well so that only four points separated the final scores, Roy Williams, Clive Milburn and Edward Harle winning by 1/3rd of a point.

Shirt sleeve weather for today's eighteen but wasn't reflected in the scores with David Barnes' 34 beating Alan Heywood on the back nine.

Considering the dreary weather conditions at 9.00am today it was surprising that eighteen (drawn into pairs) competed for the Brindley Salver Greensomes won by Ian Porter and Andy Edwards with 41 points.

The majority of trophy winners were present for the prizegiving and proceedings concluded with the Treasurer receiving subscriptions for the ensuing year.
Ivor Nelson advises that due to hip problems he will be unable to join us for the foreseeable future so we wish him a successful recovery.

Glorious weather for the sixteen who played today. Ian Hind came first with 37 points and Harry Wright second with 33.

A.P. retired early and eventually finished up for overnight observation in Larch ward from where he's managed to phone all his friends with an update.
The other twenty six enjoyed a very pleasant afternoon, John Gibson taking first place with 36 points followed by David Low who was pipped on the back six holes.
Next Tuesday we have the Brindley Salver at 9.00am followed by our AGM and prizegiving. It would be helpful if anyone with proposals could let Geoff know in advance so they can be included in the agenda.

Saxons v Celts
Dave
Could you put on the blog that everyone who put their name down will get a game.
It might happen (and pigs might fly (dcw)) that a few aspirant Saxons might be transferred over to the Celts to even up the numbers.
Everyone attending must check out their antecedents to see if they have any Celtic connections.
If they don’t know who their antecedents are (quite likely!), we can invent some.
Brian
Update:
Saxon pairings have been selected but depending on weather etc. and who turns up, Joe and I will be sorting the order of play out about 10.15am on Tuesday.

Fresh back from the Scotland tour, Joe Campbell took first prize with 33 points and John Dixon second with a better back nine in his 32 points than Ian Porter. The rest of the scores were pretty awful in breezy conditions and visitors in front making our round last nearly five hours.

Tuesday 8th September
After a brief sortie to watch a load of sweating men in tight lycra whizz by, 13 of us took to a misty course which soon cleared up into a lovely day.
Pleased to report that one of the 13 was Tommy Neilly and another was Geoff Scott, both returning after time away.
Winner was Bruce Bedford whose 39 points lost him 4 shots for £8, and second was Sandy Tonner with 34 points.
By the way, if anyone ever needs an important event filmed, Sandy’s your man. He managed to capture all of the excitement of the Tour of Britain Police Motorcyle and Skoda Race in only one minute of filming.
The problem was, he thought he was filming for 20 minutes, but forgot to press the ON button.

Joe Penrice won with 41 points and Tony Davis second with 39, edging out Mike Mapleton on the back nine countback.
This Thursday we travel to Penrith for the return match and important to note that on Tuesday 8th the major cycling event will reach Silloth about 11.00am from Cockermouth via Maryport so anyone wishing to play is advised to turn up early. Several of us will be returning from abroad later that day.

Thursday 27th August
Surprisingly considering the howling gale, twelve turned out to make today's competition a qualifier for Sandpiper handicaps. David Low's 30 points cost him two shots and I was daft enough to come second at a cost of one shot for four quid prize money.

Brampton v Sandpipers Result
The Curlews were too strong on their home patch winning 5.5 - 2.5 in miserable wet conditions but an overall win 9.5 - 6.5 to the Sandpipers.
Numbers for our regular Tuesday and Wednesday competitions have fallen dramatically, partly due to some medical problems.
I understand that John Tudor is making steady progress after his op but Willie Smith's injury due to his mishap on the 18th is worse than first thought. Sandy Tonner is consulting a specialist in Glasgow and Eddie Varah is booked in for a course of hospital treatment.
Next Thursday is our home match against Seascale and the team will be published here over the weekend.

Only fourteen turned out for the Walters' Greensomes Cup today which the pairing of John Dixon and David McCrum won with 42 points.
Both Tommy Neilly and Ian Porter are back home and doing well following surgery and Roy Williams managed to play today.
Unfortunately, Willie Smith hasn't recovered yet after falling due to a loose manhole cover and John Tudor tells me he is having a replacement hip installed tomorrow followed by knee surgery at some future date. We wish you both well. At the next AGM we should consider a bionic section.

Powfoot Match Result
Our inaugural home match against Powfoot Otters didn't get off to the most auspicious start, with us having to lend them two players to make up their team and a Sandpiper phoning from Powfoot wondering when the rest of us were going to turn up.
Anyway, everything worked out in the end and a satisfactory result of a 6 - 2 win played in bright warm sunshine, the course in good condition and topped off with a good meal.
Captain Grant Anderson lead from the front.
We look forward to the return match in July.

Another windy day with a brief shower of sleet thrown in for the Sowerby Trophy competition.
Ivor Nelson won with 40 points followed by David Low with 37. Only sixteen turned out, possibly because playing two consecutive days seemed a bit too much.

Workington Match Result
Today's 4 - 4 draw ended an eleven year drought as it was 2004 since the Sandpipers held the Shank's Trophy played over home and away legs. Captain Brian Taylor led the troops in weather that improved as the day went on.
Thank you to everyone who has enquired about Irene's health and I'm pleased to report that the surgery seems to be a complete success.

Carlisle Match Result
The good news was that although was windy it didn't rain. Even better news - the Sandpipers won by 4.5 to 3.5.
An interesting day for several reasons, and our best wishes to Carlisle's Brian Armstrong who had an argument with a buggy resulting with the Air Ambulance landing near to the eighteenth green. Brian was lucid but is likely to stay overnight in hospital for observation.
Captain Tony Davis gave the usual thanks to the Red Squirrels and our caterers.

Tuesday 7th April
Eddie Varah continued his winning run today by returning the best score of 36 points followed by Harry Wright with 35 (pipping Joe Campbell with a better back nine). Conditions started with a misty sea fret which turned to bright and breezy. Contrary to some opinions expressed at the nineteenth, winners and runners up in the past have been docked two and one points respectively even though all the £2.00 entry fee eventually goes to the charity of the Champion's choice and as I was caught last year this tradition will be upheld this year.
According to our rules, all the eight first round ties must be played by the 15th June. Hopefully the draw will be completed by the end of this week and published on our notice board.
Finally, welcome back to Tony Davis from an extended holiday and also Bob Saunders who was tempted out by the warmer weather.
Thursday and next Tuesday are our home matches against Workington and Carlisle. David Low has reserved two earlier tee times for non-team members.

Penrith Match Result
Captain Geoff Waite led the troops out for our first match of the year but was second last back to the clubhouse. Six other fourballs decided that sleet, snow, driving rain and 50mph winds were too challenging and trekked in from various parts of the course.
It was somehow calculated that the Sandpipers won today with only two groups playing the full eighteen.
