From Trevor Wilson

To all Sandpipers,
Can I please take this opportunity to wish you all the very best for the future and thank you for the past five years. Sue and I have a busy few weeks ahead of us, so I'm not sure if I will be able to get up to the golf club before we head South. As with most groups of people not everyone is going to see eye to eye with everyone, but I would like to say that 95% of you, I have enjoyed your company and friendship.
I hope the Sandpipers continue, because when I joined the golf club and was able to join the Sandpipers it enabled me to meet many more members than I probably would have, if I was just an ordinary member.
The one area that has puzzled and frustrated me greatly since joining the club, was the attitude towards the Sandpipers from some of the main club committee members, then and now, it is my experience from my previous clubs (I say clubs in plural as I've had to change clubs through work commitments) in the South that Senior sections are an integral part of a successful golf club. Because of the clicks (most of you know who they are) within the club I do not see this changing in the foreseeable future, which is a real shame and a very narrow minded way of thinking.
Anyway I leave with mostly good memories and I hope it takes a while before you say " ah yes that chap from down South, blimey I cannot remember his name".
Happy 2013 to you, your wives, partners & families.
Trevor

Thursday 27th December

Only ten took part in the slight drizzle at the start but the day did improve.
My 43 points was enough to scoop the pool and round off the year on a high note.
Very best wishes to all for a Happy New Year, especially those who through illness or infirmity etc. have decided not to renew their membership.

Tuesday, 18 December 2012

Tuesday 18th December

What a difference in the weather. Bright warm sunshine with no breeze for the twenty who turned out.
Bruce Bedford won with 39 points and Trevor Wilson second with 36.
Once again most supported the 19th hole for the apres golf.

Stuart Jones (Updated)

I'm informed that Stuart who attended our Christmas Lunch recently fell of some ladders and was taken to Carlisle hospital.
I'm sure we all wish him a speedy recovery and I'll post an update when more facts are known.
Update:
Stuart fractured his Femur when he fell from the ladder, he had surgery on Saturday afternoon, apparently after a few problems they managed to put him together again. Jan spoke to him this morning and the physio had just got him out of bed.

Tuesday, 11 December 2012

Tuesday 11th December

Twenty turned out at 9.00am and kicked off in frost at -3C for our Bottle Trot.
Half of the game was played as Blind Man's Golf due to a combination of chimney smoke and rising fog but Ian Porter scored a winning 40 points from the 16 holes on the short course with Eddie Varah (50 points last Sunday) one behind. Everyone received a prize and retired to the dining room for a superb Christmas dinner with the other members who had better sense than to play.
Secretary Geoff concluded the proceedings by extending our appreciation to the catering staff, wishing everyone the seasons greetings and making mention of an item of gardening equipment.

Bottle Trot Rules

Providing more than six play, the competition will be run as a qualifying competition (ie full handicap).
If on temporary greens we will play off half club handicap.
Geoff

Tuesday, 4 December 2012

Tuesday 4th December

Sixteen of us managed to get half way round before the rain started but a least it came down vertically so an umbrella was everyone's best friend.
Tommy Neilly found half sandpiper's handicap no problem with 37 points, outpointing me on the back nine.
Our Secretary informs me that for our Christmas bash next Tuesday smart / casual attire is acceptable as well as collar and tie. Note that I used the word attire and not dress but if that is your preference you will be equally welcomed.

Caution Required

Due to the severe icy conditions, this photo taken last year should act as a reminder to make sure you watch where you put your feet.

Thursday, 29 November 2012

Thursday 29th November

Only sixteen holes on temporary greens were playable today due to ice, although the sun made conditions bearable.
Terry Stubbs and Tommy Neilly blitzed the course with 46 and 44 points respectively off Sandpiper handicaps but I would draw everyone's attention to Rule 5g of our rules and regulations published under the Constitution link on our web site www.sunside.co.uk/sandpipers for future short course competitions.

Tuesday, 27 November 2012

Tuesday 27th November

A hint of sunshine tempted twenty one competitors to try their luck today.
Geoff Waite rose to the occasion with 38 points, one ahead of Eddie Varah.
Most of the rest of us managed to dip our balls in the ever expanding ponds on some of the fairways.
A sheet is now on the notice board to enable everyone to pre-select their Christmas lunch from a menu.

Wednesday, 21 November 2012

Tuesday 20th update

A large group of 13 turned up
E. Varah      33Pts.
T. Neilly      30Pts.

Report by Joe

Our web site is now up to date with revised rules and constitution, minutes of 2012 AGM and dates for competitions and matches for 2013.

Tuesday 20th November

Unfortunately I can't attend this Tuesday so as a precaution I'm reminding you to take chest waders in case you need a lifejacket near the 6th green.

Friday, 16 November 2012

Thursday 15th November

Far kinder weather today but still only sixteen turned up which gives cause for concern about assembling a full squad for our matches against other clubs next year.
Joe Campbell took full advantage with an impressive 38 points, 3 ahead of second placed Robin Binny.
Our Committee have decided that the £16 Christmas Menu (everyone received a copy with the official circular from Silloth Golf Club) is best suited to our requirements. It's a comprehensive menu with several choices for each course and it will help our caterers if you could advise your selections in advance.

Tuesday, 13 November 2012

Tuesday 13th November

Abysmal is the word that sums up today's conditions and the scores returned by the majority of the fifteen Sandpipers who ventured out.
John Tudor came second on count back with 26 points and Brian Taylor slipped up by winning  with 31,  thereby being cut two shots and losing two balls in the process (no pun intended).

Sandpipers Fashion Accessory

Will this be the latest 'must have' accessory, recently modelled in the bar?

Thursday, 8 November 2012

Thursday 8th November

Roger Cutts' 33 points was enough to take first prize today and Geoff Waite's second place score of 31 bettered the remaining fourteen scores.
Not much else to report except the in now a drainage ditch running from the pond on the 14th fairway to the frogs pond on the left of the 10th fairway.

Tuesday, 6 November 2012

Tuesday 6th November

Only twelve 'enjoyed' today's weather window that allowed us to get round dry.
Roy Williams took full advantage to win with 36 points, followed by David Low with 35.
I understand a photo of a new 'must have' Sandpipers fashion accessory is on the way - watch this space.

Christmas Bash

Our annual Christmas do is scheduled for Tuesday 11th December with golf commencing at 9.00am followed by lunch at about 2.45pm. In the event of poor weather the meal will be brought forward to 12-12.30. A list is on the notice board for those wishing to dine.
Please note that our first tee time through the winter is now 10.50am instead of 11.00am.

Tuesday, 30 October 2012

Tuesday 30th October

Seventeen Sandpipers tackled the assault course in challenging conditions today.
Willie Smith won with 33 points and Charles Woodhouse second with 32.
Highlight of the day was Terry Stubbs' tee shot on the third which incredibly reached the green.
OK - it was only the green for the second but incredible none the less.

Friday, 26 October 2012

Web Site Update

Our web site has been modified at last with the 'Gallery' link now including photos from our recent presentation ceremony following the AGM.
Obviously I can't publish next year's fixture list yet and there is a minor query regarding the Rules in the 'Constitutution' link, but the Secretary's report and minutes of the AGM are available.

Thursday, 25 October 2012

Thursday 25th October

Only thirteen took part today in the north wind and the added hazard of spiked greens.
Ejaz Malik took first place with 34 points, beating Terry Stubbs on countback.
We are now playing off tee mats for the rest of winter.
The list for names is up on the notice board for our annual Christmas Bash and lunch.

I have a contact phone number if anyone requires more details of price and included extras.

Thursday, 4 October 2012

Thursday 4th October

Shirtsleeves weather at one point today but the scores reflect the difficult test of golf presented by the course.
Terry Stubbs led the field of eighteen with 35 points followed by Joe Campbell with 32.

Tuesday, 2 October 2012

Tuesday 2nd October

Eighteen defied the forecast for the Brindley Greensomes and fortunately only had to suffer two heavy squalls plus a strong breeze.
Joe Campbell and myself proved the benefits of Anglo / Celtic cooperation with a winning score of 38 points.
Our AGM (chaired by Secretary Geoff Waite) raised variances of opinion about several matters and the minutes will be published in due course.
Most of the trophy winners for 2012 were in attendance and (hopefully) photos will be published on our web site in the near future.

Thursday, 27 September 2012

Thursday 27th September

Sandpipers Championship.
Unfortunately for Sandy Tonner he met an in form Ian Porter who went round in 79 gross which was enough to win him the trophy.
Today's winner from the remaining thirteen players was Brian Taylor with 34 points.

Wednesday, 26 September 2012

Tuesday 2nd October

Just a reminder that next Tuesday is a greensomes (numbers permitting) commencing at 9.00am followed by our AGM and prizegiving.
If you feel unable to play please try to support the AGM etc.

Celts v Saxons Result

Celts' Captain Brian Taylor was at last able to use the loser's speech kept in his pocket for the past three years. Even his attempt to link Celtic genes to the McGeordie who produced a half couldn't disguise the stuffing his team suffered. Saxons' Captain Trevor Wilson was magnanimous in his reply before accepting the trophy.
Our thanks to the Club Secretary for forecasting the result by raising the flag of St. George at the first tee.

Tuesday 4th September

Twenty five Sandpipers found out today how difficult is is to hold a round together in current conditions plus a stiff breeze.
Most scores were in the sub 31 points range but Ian Porter bucked the trend with 37 points to win the Bob Saunders Trophy, even with financial problems on his mind. Harry Wright was runner up with 36 points.
Joe is still three players short for our away match v Carlisle.

Appleby Match Result

In sunny conditions with a wind from the North the Sandpipers entertained the Ramblers from Appleby.
8 matches in total all closely contended with some going down to the last putt on the 18th green.
Pick of the matches was the pairing of Barry Bower and Joe Campbell paired against a 3 & 10 handicaps. The result had Barry & Joe strutting round the Club house like a couple of cockerels.
Captain Trevor Wilson in his speech said that their match's topic of conversation was Ladies underwear which was discussed all the way round?????
Match result was a 5-3 victory for the Sandpipers.
Once again a super meal was served up by Octavia & David.
Regards
John W Gibson

Tuesday, 28 August 2012

Tuesday 28th August

Twenty one Sandpipers competed for the J.W.Banks Trophy in bright sunshine but a wind that was blowing a hooley.
Roger Cutts came second with 36 points but a few lucky putts gave me the trophy with 37 points.
Thursday is our home match v Appleby and the list for the Ellis Beattie pairs with the ladies is on the notice board.

Beckfoot Traffic Lights

The Allerdale office of the County Highways Department inform me that they are unable to undertake any work to counteract the erosion that threatens to undermine the road until Natural England have completed an impact assessment that any work may have on the local wildlife and habitat.
it appears that no timescale has been allocated so the road may go before it gets fixed!!!

Seniors Open

The Seniors Open started in very wet conditions with the first groups going out in some very heavy showers.
As the day progressed the conditions improved and the sun did come out for a while.
The best result of the day came from the first group out, J Maddison of Silloth with 43 points.

Congratulations to Sandy Tonner, winner of the Sandpipers Trophy with 37 points.
Also in the prizes from the Sandpipers: J Gibson 37 pts, R Cutts 35pts and D Low 33pts.

Thanks to Geoff Waite and John Tudor for their efforts through  the day inputting the scores and updating the leader board.
Also thanks to Joe Holmes (Competition Secretary), and Brenda Gibson for her assistance with the computer and final results sheets.
Thanks to Captain (and fellow Sandpiper) M Cowen who presented the prizes.

Regards
John W Gibson

Tuesday, 21 August 2012

Tuesday 21st August

Once again the difficulty of the course got the better of most of the twenty six players who turned out today and was reflected in the scores.
Robin Binny won with 34 points, one ahead of Geoff Scott.
This Thursday is Silloth Seniors' Open and I'll certainly be taking a few extra balls with me, having lost four today.

Twenty three turned out today and three scored more than 36 points.

The course is in good condition but the rough is very punishing for anything off line.

Tuesday 7th August

Twenty two contested the Ronnie Thompson Trophy in blustery conditions.
Sandy Tonner was the only one to break ninety gross and carded a creditable nett 70.

to take the last 4 matches.

Seascale Match Result

Conditions humid with rain showers.
Captained by Roy Williams the Sandpipers fielded 8 pairs against Seascale.
Barry Bower was unable to make it, so Mrs Wilson kindly agreed to let Trevor play as long as he won and did not have to pay a £1.
The Sandpipers responded well to Roy's leadership and turned in a resounding 7- 1 victory. We will not name the couple who let Roy down (one was a Dr. and the other a fast talking Scotsman).
Again an excellent meal was provided by David & Octavia.

Maryport Match Result

The Bank Enders should be used to the windy conditions we experienced today but combined with the extra rough it proved too much and the Sandpipers prevailed with a 5.5 - 3.5 win.
Captain Terry Stubbs  was very gracious in his victory speech.
The highlight of the apres match meal was whale and chips.

Tuesday, 12 June 2012

Appleby Match Result

Ideal conditions for golf, both warm and no wind. The course was in excellent condition with exceptional greens.
The only black cloud was our 5 - 3 defeat announced by Captain of the Day Roy Williams after our tasty meal.

Important Meeting

Silloth Golf Club's committee have called a meeting for 20th June to consider converting our member's club to a Community Amateur Sports Club. The implications are quite serious as by gaining significant advantages in Local Government rates the assets of the club in the case of winding up are distributed to a charity or other appropriate non profit body. There are also implications regarding who can join and what the club has to do to promote the sport.
For a bit of light reading try

Tuesday 22nd May

Only twenty two turned out on a glorious day to compete for the Tom Sowerby Trophy.
Where has everyone gone lately as a couple of years ago at least thirty would have taken part.
Richard Brogden and Robin Binny were the best of the bunch with 39 points each, Richard winning on count back.
I've left the report of the Workington match until last so you can guess the result!

Wednesday, 16 May 2012

Seascale Match Result

A convincing 6 - 2 win for the Sandpipers lead by captain Geoff Waite, and surprisingly every match continued through the half hour deluge which fortunately wasn't accompanied by wind..
Once again the after match proceedings were very hospitable.

Thursday, 3 May 2012

Thursday 3rd May

Congratulations to both Bernard Keighley and John Dixon who both knocked their drives on the first up into the horseshoe.
John carried on the good work to amass 36 points, one behind today's winner John Gibson.
Next Tuesday is our away match with Seascale.
Joe is still six players short for the forthcoming match against Workington - please step up to the plate and help him out.

Tuesday, 1 May 2012

Tuesday 1st May

Only four of the nineteen contestants for the George Doughty Cup competition today came in with nett par stableford scores or better, giving some idea of the difficulty playing into a stiff NE wind. It seems I coped the best with 40 points, one ahead of Ian Porter.
Thursday is in our diaries as a 4BBB subject to a suitable number of players turning up and next Tuesday is our away match against Seascale commencing at 10.00am.

Friday, 27 April 2012

Thursday 26th April

Anyone who enjoys playing in a strong north wind with the constant threat of rain would have felt at home today. Eight of us did turn out and Harry Wright took the pot with 34 points.
Next Tuesday is the George Doughty Cup, a handicap qualifying competition. On Wednesday some of us are visiting Thornhill GC and Thursday is in the calendar as a 4BBB competition.

Wednesday, 25 April 2012

John Cooper Trophy

Twenty four players turning up allowed the unusual format of drawn pairs adding their individual stableford scores together to decide the winners.
Joe Campbell (43 points) and Jim Gilfillan (32 points) won the trophy as well as a pound each off Willie Smith and myself!!!
Geoff Waite and Trevor Wilson were just 3 points behind them.

Workington Match Result

After losing brownie points for playing on his wedding anniversary, our 6 - 4 win for Captain of the  Day Brian Taylor must have been some compensation.
Once again we were lucky with the weather and finished off with a good meal.

Tuesday, 10 April 2012

Tuesday 10th April

25 points was enough to secure the 16th place for the championship play offs and will give an idea of the difficult conditions today. Strong winds and a couple of heavy showers didn't hold back David Low with 38 points and Geoff Waite with 37, first and second respectively.

A much better day which was reflected in the scores, 40 points for Ejaz Malik and 39 for Joe Campbell in a field of twenty two.
Next Tuesday is our championship qualifier with the entry fee being donated to the charity of last year's winner's choice so we hope for a good turn out.
Also we play Workington at home on Thursday commencing at 10.30am.

Tuesday, 3 April 2012

Tuesday 3rd April

Today fourteen Sandpipers took part in the new sport of 'Extreme Golf' and everyone stayed the course.
Harry Wright won with 28 points, just ahead of Mike Mapleton.
For those who thought better of turning out, you missed a howling, bitter cold gale.

Sandpipers v Carlisle Result

Trevor Wilson lead his troops to a 6 - 3 victory today in balmy conditions.
Not much more to report really except we all enjoyed an excellent meal afterwards.

Thursday, 22 March 2012

Thursday 22nd March

Brian Taylor's 40 points was six clear of David Allison's second place score on a day that end of play finished in near shirt sleeve conditions. Twenty two turned out and if we'd known a bit sooner we could all have sung 'happy birthday' to Joe Campbell on the first tee.

Tuesday 20th March

A pity the course was shortened for our first qualifying competition of the year but with a strong breeze the +5 bogey scores for Trevor Wilson (1st) and Robin Binny were still pretty good. Roughly half of the scores were level or better. Twenty played with nineteen scores recorded.

Thursday, 15 March 2012

Thursday 15th March

The weather forecast gave today as the warmest of the year so far - Wrong!!!!
Sixteen played with Jim Gilfillan's 35 points winning and Harry Wright second with 32.
Tuesday will be our first qualifying competition with the "bogey" format and the team for our Carlisle match is on the notice board.

Tuesday, 13 March 2012

Tuesday 13th March

A pleasant day for the 26 Sandpipers who turned out, even better for Grant Anderson who demonstrated the Highland Fling on the sixth tee to celebrate his "hole in one". His generosity in supplying a wee dram for his colleagues in the club house was much appreciated.
Trevor Wilson won the pot with 39 points (coming back from 4 down in our fourball) and Mike Mapleton claiming second place with 37.
Welcome back to Ejaz Malik and Malcolm Donald who have both been absent for a while.

Thursday, 8 March 2012

Thursday 8th March

For the first time in ages I put a decent round together to score 39 points.
Unfortunately only 15 Sandpipers turned out so the four lost shots for winning wasn't very profitable.
Playing companion Willie Smith took second prize with 33 points, ahead of John Dixon on count back.

Tuesday, 6 March 2012

Tuesday 6th March

The largest turnout of the year so far (28) needed an extra couple of layers to keep out the keen wind.
Roy Williams celebrated his return from the USA with a countback win over Roger Cutts, both scoring 36 points.
Next Tuesday is the start of the "summer" season so our start time reverts to 11.00am.

Thursday, 1 March 2012

Thursday 1st March

Only thirteen turned out today and although conditions were reasonable 34 points from David Barnes was enough to win and Club Captain Mike Cowen runner up with 30.

Wednesday, 29 February 2012

Tuesday 28th February

Poor scores are still being returned even on a reasonable day like today.
The common complaint seems to be putting and even from eighteen inches the ball isn't guaranteed to drop.
My 34 points was enough to win on countback against Brian Taylor with nineteen taking part.

Thursday, 23 February 2012

Thursday 23rd February

A strong wind affected today's scores with John Gibson's 33 points enough to win and a surprised Brian Taylor coming second with 30. Eighteen of us took part.

Wednesday, 22 February 2012

John Kennedy

For those who haven't heard, John has relocated to Moffat and I'm sure everyone will join me in thanking John for his contribution in running the Sandpiper's (affairs) for several years and wishing him a happy and healthy retirement in his new home.
We all look forward to receiving an invitation to your house warming party John!

Tuesday, 14 February 2012

Tuesday 14th February

Lucky dip putting today on spiked greens but that didn't bother Tony Davis who's 38 points was three ahead of second placed Roger Cutts.
Welcome to new member Bruce Bedford who won £1 on his first outing.

11 brave souls went out and T. Neilly came top with 42Pts.
Winter greens , so half handicap well done T N.
Joe

Thursday the course was closed again so if it's anywhere below 15 degrees C you are advised to phone up and possibly save yourselves a wasted journey !!!

Thursday, 2 February 2012

Thursday 2nd February

Today's conditions were ideal for those who wrapped up well, bright sunshine and no wind.
Robin Binny's 39 took the pot off  ten other players with four of us just one point behind.
Please take care in the current icy conditions as although it looked OK today, two went down probably due to having clumps of ice stuck under their shoes plus another of us last Saturday.

Tuesday, 31 January 2012

Tuesday 31st January

Low scores, possibly due to the condition of some greens and cool conditions, allowed my 36 points to take first prize just ahead of Ian Porter who was out in 33 gross.
Good to see AP back so soon after his op and confounding his consultant's opinion that he would be able to play golf after just seven days.

Thursday, 26 January 2012

Thursday 26th January

Robin Binny's playing partners were delighted to take advantage of his offer to use the profits from his winning 36 points score for the purchase of alcohol. If you're reading this Robin, Trevor has a small amount of change for you!!!
Tom Neilly came second with 35 from a field of fourteen.

Tuesday, 24 January 2012

Tuesday 24th January

Only ten turned out again for what turned out to be a pleasant afternoon.
David Low cleaned up with 39 points.
I'm informed that both John Tudor and Stuart Jones are making good progress after joints surgery.

Thursday, 19 January 2012

Thursday 19th January

Harry Wright's 31 points was enough to take the cash off the other nine who set off.
A sudden downpour put paid to what had otherwise been a decent walk.
Spare a thought for Alan Proud who's been in for a couple of stents and will have to take things easy for a few weeks.

Tuesday, 17 January 2012

Tuesday 17th January

Incredible scores today off half handicaps, even on the short course with holes the size of buckets.
Tommy Neilly's 44 points was eclipsed by Ian Porter with 47. Terry displayed his usual elegant charm when announcing the winners.
Catering is more or less back to normal although it may be some time before the dining room is back in use.

Thursday, 12 January 2012

Thursday 12th January

A much better day with bright sunshine and little wind. Two 37 points took the honours, Brian Taylor being pipped on countback by Alan Heywood.
Our web site has been updated to include the 2012 competitions and matches.
If anyone has any suitable photos please forward them for inclusion.

Tuesday, 10 January 2012

Tuesday 10th January

The miserable conditions were reflected in today's nineteen scores. Geoff Scott's 35 points was exceptional followed by Harry Wright with 30. The rest excelled at the mediocre.

Saturday, 7 January 2012

Catering

Due to alterations to the kitchen and dining room, David will not be able to provide food or drinks until Thursday 12th January. He is hoping to set up a temporary kettle but no guarantee.

Thursday, 5 January 2012

Thursday 5th January

A happy and prosperous new year to everyone.
Joe "chip in twice" Campbell scored a winning 39 points in today's challenging wind, just one ahead of Geoff Waite.
The club's Open Competitions forms are now available and early entry is recommended to avoid disappointment.
